A social distancing cycle to Fremantle

Two cruise liners quarantined in the port and one waiting off the coast.

Yesterday I decided I needed a long cycle so off I headed to the coast and return. At the moment Fremantle has a few cruise liners who want to off load their passengers, some who have the virus. This happened in Sydney last week and infections spread everywhere so the ships are quarantined and the non Australian passengers will be driven straight to the airport and locals will have to be self isolated for 2 weeks.

It’s been interesting seeing everyone’s music videos which seem to reflect age and nationality. My music starts around the 70’s until now however I’m liking less and less of the new songs. In my teenage years I spent hours recording radio station songs onto cassettes then later listening to the radio in the car. The song below is from New Zealand band Split Enz for my cruise ship themed post.

Here’s the link to my cycle on Saturday https://www.crazyguyonabike.com/doc/page/?o=1mr&page_id=601581&v=2l

I live in the hills just east of the city of Perth, Western Australia and I've loved cycling all my life, From riding to primary school when I was 8 years old to cycle touring as a grumpy old man. Cycling is freedom on two wheels and I love getting on my bike at any opportunity.

Yes, it’s a big question about what to do with all the cruise ship passengers. There seem to be Aussies stranded all over the place. And it is definitely a time when everyone is going a little stir crazy and wanting to go for a long run/ride/sail/fish. I got a crash course in all the 70s and 80s pub rock and pop music when I met Nigel – incl Split Enz and Crowded House. I believe I had to listen to the 100 Best Aussie Pub Songs – or something like that – as instructional material in 1999, ha! And it was very much a cultural education to go to the pub and see the ENTIRE pub break out into dance when Nut Bush came on. I was amazed that EVERYONE knew the dance moves!

I’d love to visit that pub where everyone started dancing Nut Bush, sounds like indoctrination being subject to all those Aussie songs.

Great murals – glad you had such a nice ride – got a real kick out of Split Enz!

Glad you got out for a ride and thanks for all the great photos. I recently drove around our cul-de-sac to give the motor and tires and change of pace and it felt so free to be moving farther than couch to kitchen to bedroom to loo.

Hi Goddess Kathleen. They-re letting us ride around still, just not in groups. I’m still riding to work and back, would hate to be housebound. It’s not as bad here yet, our isolation helps.

    Revenge of the Quokka.

Like you, I’m doing my best to deal with the disappointment of a delayed bike tour. Perhaps I’ll direct a Minnesota version of the movie “Revenge of the Quokka.” I’ll call it “Revenge of the Albino Squirrel.” (I’ve seen a few of them around here lately.)

“Revenge of the Albino Squirrel.” Sounds brilliant. Maybe a short youtube movie. I challenge you to do it. You might have to find a stuffed squirrel or fresh roadkill I reckon as squirrels are notoriously uncooperative actors.

Great post. I love the murals, count my blessings that I’ve never been tempted to board a cruise ship, but mostly I’m astounded by how often trucks get stuck under that bridge! It averages to about 4 times per year for the last 15 years. Amazing no one has come up with a solution to this, given that you can’t avoid stupidity.

I did one cruise about 40 years ago out of Sydney to South Pacific. It was OK but I felt trapped all the time, I prefer cycling with the freedom of the great outdoors. They have plans for a new bridge, I reckon that would be a tough bridge to demolish.

Nice ride and photos — sorry to hear your tour had to be aborted. 🙁

I prefer the word delayed, It could happen around October in Spring. Alas, can’t make any plans at the moment.
