BEFORE AND AFTER: June 24

Remember that scene from the fine movie, Close Encounters of the Third Kind? I sure did when I was planning my bike tour of the northern Great Plains a few years ago. A spectacle such as that is something I had to see for myself.

I arrived at the Devil’s Tower National Monument fairly early in the day so I got a great campsite right in front of that huge tower of rock. I absorbed the view all afternoon and evening. The next morning I rode my bike to the visitor center and from there I climbed the boulder field to the base of the tower itself. It was magnificent.

Despite all my observation and exploration of the monument, I saw absolutely no evidence that ANY alien activity had EVER occurred in the area. I’m just going to come right out and say it: I BELIEVE SPIELBERG FAKED THE WHOLE THING!

August 23, 2017: I had a ringside seat for the alien light show that was most surely going to occur that evening. I was even prepared to walk up the ramp onto a flying saucer and join Richard Dreyfus on a distant planet. Alas, it didn’t happen.

June 24, 2020: MY Town has a pretty cool tower too. It’s called “Angel’s Tower” because we’re Minnesota NICE . . . and when Angel’s Tower promises alien activity, it does not disappoint.

Thank you for sticking with me for yet another day. I’ll be back tomorrow.

Hi. My name is Greg and I ride my bike a lot. That is to say, I ride my bike almost every day. I go on long rides and short rides. Sunny rides, cloudy rides, and rainy rides. I like commuting, errand-running, day-tripping, overnighting, and touring on my bike. I ride on city streets, highways, gravel, single track, and snow with equal enthusiasm. Sometimes I ride fast and sometimes I ride slow. I try to keep my feet on the pedals at stop lights and I do not dismount when I hop up on a curb. I have a roadie bike, a mountain bike and a touring bike. I try to accept any challenge a bike ride can throw at me without complaint. But I don't like bugs.

Okay Rich, were you one of the electronic musical engineers who advised the Francois Truffaut character?

Well done, Greg. I have never seen that movie as an adult. I should put it on my list. Probably too busy for the next year, but someday, someday… I remember it being a big deal as a kid with the connections to IN, but my only memory of that movie is the mashed potatoes. I’ve never seen Jaws either. Def a Gen X’er, not a Joneser 😉

I can’t believe I’ve never seen this film either. We’ll have to put it n our watch list. I’d like to see a film shot at Devil’s Tower, but I’d especially like to see one starring Truffaut. I didn’t realize he’d ever been an actor.

I’m not sure if he ever acted in any other film. Such is the influence of Spielberg.
