Bicycle Memories

Now in the days of the shutdown I have been cycling less. Sitting at home my thoughts go back in time to earlier cycling days. I rummage through the boxes of unsorted pictures and leaf through photo albums – all from the pre-digital days and a bit chaotic.

When traveling in the days of film cameras, we didn’t take as many pictures as we do now. With few photos to back up my memories of the towns we rode through, where we slept, what we ate, how many kilometers we covered, my reconstruction of the past can be pretty spotty and occasionally downright inaccurate. Nevertheless, I cherish those memories and the mood they convey is perhaps more essential than all the statistics I could have kept. And I do have a few pictures and diaries.

I'm a US born ex-pat, having lived most of my adult life in Munich, Germany. Cycling and photography are my favorite things.

Very nice! What a great treasure of photos and memories.

By the way, I showed Daniel’s music video to my ace support crew. All her bands have been shut down for weeks, even before we went into lockdown. After watching the video, she dashed out the front door clutching her bass clarinet, mumbling something about “…get to Germany and join the band….”

    PS: Love the perm! 😉

Your ace support crew would be most welcome! I’m glad she liked the band. I wish she could join them.

I loved everything about your photos and memories of your first cycling tour with Daniel. That was a beautiful way to remember and share the story. The band Daniel plays with sure have a great sound and seem like they have fun jamming together. Good playing. Thanks for sharing! Stay healthy.

Thanks, TJ! I enjoyed writing it, too. As for the band, one press review wrote, “The sound of the Express Brass Band isn’t just looking for freedom. It is a synonym for this freedom. A freedom, by the way, that is not free from something, but free for something. ”
They are a bunch of musicians not striving for perfection but a good sound and feeling.

Keep on rummaging! Very cool photos and stories — Interesting to see the difference between then and now.
Go along and get along, learn as you go, you have learned very well!

You can’t buy memories like that.

Wish I had taken more early cycling photos.

I wish the same thing, Led! There are enormous gaps where I have no photos at all.

Great story, Suzanne. You were (and still are) one cool mom for doing such a trip with your son–especially in those days without all the conveniences and luxuries of modern gear and electronics.

Thanks, Greg! We didn’t have or know the conveniences so we didn’t miss them. I’d sure miss them today though!
