Hi Tony – Looked like a stunner of a day. A downhill run sounds like a nice ride right now, as I fight all the fatigue. I enjoyed those views of Hobart – no way you’d get me to live in one of those bushfire-prone homes, though! I read an interesting article in the Good Weekend pull-out magazine in the Sydney Morning Herald about the booming property market in Hobart and how it is turning the city into one of haves and have-nots. I have only been to Launceston, so Hobart looks like fun one day! Thanks for the post.

Hi Emily. Yes, Hobart house prices have really taken off this past year. Lots of “Mainlanders” are settling here after selling their homes in Brisbane, Melbourne, Sydney. wherever and moving to Tas buying a house for part of their winnings in the housing lottery and then buying toys such as cars, boats etc. We got the feeling that Hobart is changing to suit the newcomers (and huge numbers of tourists) but hopefully it won’t change too much or it will become what they fled from. Already (as part of the have-nots) students from the north can’t continue their University education in Hobart because there is nowhere for them to stay. Properties that were previously rented are being sucked up into AirBnB. This is not good.

I spoke to the son of a friend who lives close to the top of Strickland Avenue and who had just spent the weekend at the new mountain bike centre at Maydena. His bushfire plan is to grab the bag of important things, his bikes and get out. There are numerous suburbs around Hobart like this one – a great mix of (often wooden) houses and eucalypts and easily burnable shrubs. It makes for a very pleasant lifestyle but on hot summer days with a decent wind blowing it only takes one mistake or arsonist………

We are back home now and I am racking my brains as to where to ride the Challenge this week. Nothing obvious is popping out so I will go shopping instead.

Nice to see more of your part of the world, Tony! And all that sun!
