Coffeeneuring Challenge 2018

It’s coffeeneuring time!

Hello my darlings.

My apologies for the late notice, but the 2018 Coffeeneuring Challenge starts this Friday, October 12. I checked the Chasing Mailboxes website too early in September to learn this year’s dates for the Coffeeneuring Challenge, and I forgot to look again until today.

We expect all of you to have a great time meeting this challenge. There are loads of rules but you’ll not have any trouble meeting them (“Rule 11: Earth Rule. As always, there are no geographic limitations to the Coffeeneuring Challenge, except that you must coffeeneur on planet Earth.”).

The basic rules are:

  • over the course of 7’ish weeks [October 12 through November 25, 2018]
  • ride your bike 7 different places,
  • at least 2 miles round-trip each time,
  • drink 7 cups of coffee (or similar), and
  • take 7 pictures as proof of your coffeeneuring [my add for Cycle365: and your bike, somehow].

To read the complete rules and learn more about just what coffeeneuring is and can be, go to

You can even qualify for a free* prize if you do all that.

Coffeeneuring is the creation of the fabulous touring cyclist, randonneur, and runner named Mary Gersemalina. Her website is We had a group doing coffeeneuring for a few years on Bike Life and it’ll be nice to continue here.

See you out there!

Yeah! I’m planning on trying this. Thanks for the notice.

Great! Can’t wait to see what you have to show us.

Rules are our friend. They keep us within tight constraints so that we don’t do wild things like sell all our possessions and go traveling for the rest of our retired lives.

Looking forward to what you come up with during your sojourn.

Friday 12th. Right. Must organise a reflecty of bike, coffee and me…. Now, where can I do that?

      C’mon up here!

Ok, Goddess, gotcha! I’ll try to get 7 rides. Many thanks for presiding over the Coffeeneuring Challenge once again!

Who cares how many rides we get in? It’s supposed to be fun.

I was wondering about doing it again this year because I’m so bored with my rides around here – so much suburbia to get through to get to the nice parts. So I think I’m going to drive to all seven starts/finishes so I have somewhere new to ride. We’ll see how many I get in myself.

Your ride boredom is interesting. I was thinking about visiting new cafes – which mostly means new areas and new rides. It would just make a change but mean a fair bit of travel. Is it OK to share your inner theme?

      • By: Kathleen Jones Posted: October 9, 2018

Yes, Tony, it’s okay to share your inner theme. We would have found out eventually.

I like that Kathleen — who cares about how many rides we get in, let’s just have fun!

I have the badges to prove that I have completed the challenge for the past four years, and have been considering passing it up this year. But with your wise words, and the camaraderie of this group, I will attempt what I can while we travel from home near Seattle for some time with the Grands in Sacramento.

Will be gone for most of October, and will grab a teaneaurring (I don’t drink coffee) outing when I can, and will post any outing here. No theme for me as I will be in unfamiliar territory for most of the challenge. Maybe that IS a theme ;’-)

Thanks for leading this group into ‘neurring territory.

It might be drier in Sacto. But maybe not as scenic. Whatever, I think you’ll show us some great stuff.

I may just try this this year. No guarantee though as for all its gastronomic excellence France does not produce much in the way of good coffee. But I will try. My personal challenge will be to remember to bring my camera on the rides. Age has not been kind to my short term memory. At least I still remember my pants!

    Stages of memory loss:

    1. You forget names.

    2. You forget faces.

    3. You forget to zip your pants.

    4. You forget to unzip your pants.

    • By: Kathleen Jones Posted: October 9, 2018

Mon ami, I trust you to remember all the pantsy things during this time period. After that you are on your own.

So I’m going to try this even though it is super busy at work and I’m supposed to be very carefully rationing my energy. I will do tea, kombucha or water kefir (all brewed items) instead of coffee, and I’ll only post here and not on the official Coffeeneuring site.

And yes, definitely go drive somewhere and then ride!!! I used to drive places to start overnight or three-day rides – now I just drive for day rides to pick up new roads. Maybe you need a new roads goal? (Warning: it is very addictive). Your gasoline is way cheaper than ours, so go explore new realms and roads! Your head and heart will be so happy you did 🙂

    • By: Kathleen Jones Posted: October 9, 2018

Thanks, Em, it will be a pleasure to have you join us, as usual. Your unridden roads is a very tempting idea. And don’t worry, you don’t have to post anywhere else. Mary’s site just has the rules and a wrap-up. Everyone posts to social media or their own blogs, then sends her links as proof of coffeeneuring in order to get the prize. I haven’t gone for the prize except the first time – a nice patch for your pannier.

Yea…..we’re back!! We’ll do our best here on the central coast! Like you I’m a little weary of my local rides so maybe this will get me to check out new places. I’m going to challenge myself to 7 new coffee sites.

    • By: Kathleen Jones Posted: October 12, 2018

We’ll have to try something like meeting somewhere but riding from different directions.

    “Hello My Darlings”.

That’s a catch-phrase used by a British comedian called Charlie Drake when opening his TV show in the UK. Charlie Drake is “legendary” for a little ditty called “My Boomerang Won’t Come Back”. Well, I bet not too many people know that and even fewer are interested !!! It’s just that when I started to read your post, dear Goddess, I could hear his voice saying the words.

    • By: Kathleen Jones Posted: October 12, 2018

I looked up the boomerang song on Youtube. Ugh (nowadays). I tried to get a listen to the catchphrase but wasn’t able to find one after a short search and a couple of listens. Ah well. I will take your word for it.
