First Ride of the Season

Finally, I managed to get on my bike and do a little shake down cruise from home, before I drive it elsewhere. Good thing I did because my computer wasn’t working.

Most of my rides will have to be on Tuesdays or Thursdays, because those are the days my husband attends an Adult Day Center. I use most of that time getting things done around here. The windows are washed. The deck, drive and walk are power washed and the deck floor was given another coat of stain. All the shrub beds have been prettied up and more mulch added. So, most of Jim’s first five days at the ADC, I was super busy. Today, before I got on my bike, I weeded my small garden and planted flowers and green beans. Anyway, I’m ready to take some time for myself and ride my bike.

I thought the problem with the bike computer was the battery, so I rode to a nearby drugstore and bought one. Back home, I saw the computer problem was more serious than just needing power. It appeared quite ill with many 8’s showing on the screen and I think terminal because none of the buttons, even in combination, would not change a thing. So, on our 54th wedding anniversary tomorrow, I will be getting a new bicycle computer, I hope.

To get my mileage (a whole 3.4 miles), I used google maps. I do not remember how to add a picture, but even if I did, I’d only had a picture of the bike computer and its strange display. I have another ride planned and it will take me into uncharted territories. Well, at least some roads that will be new to Violette. Will have to see if the rain holds out on Thursday.

For now, loaded touring isn’t possible due to my husband's health issues. I’m used to cycling by myself, but I can't go off and leave him. Cycle 365 has motivated me to not give up riding just because I don't have time to go as far or do awesome rides like I did in the past.

Glad you got out on your bike after all that washing and weeding and scrubbing and staining! I wouldn’t have had the energy after taking care of all those people chores. Hope more rides are to come!

And I hope your move went smoothly and you are sitting sharing a bottle of celebratory wine right now!

I should have taken a camera, if for no other reason than to get Violette’s picture wearing her pretty purple seat cover. Thank you again! Next time I’ll get a shot. Who knows, maybe I’ll even find a brick wall to pose her in front of.

I BET you can find a brick wall, and Violet will love her profile taken with her purple saddle! You go girl.

    Good to see you back!
Looking forward to your riding season — weather hasn’t been too cooperative — hope that improves too. If not rain, then its wind.

Thank you, Rich! You are so right about the rain and the wind. We’ve had so much rain that our sometimes dry creek has consistently had so much water this winter that Mr. and Mrs. Mallard seem to be permanent residents now. Thunder storms are expected again tonight and several times tomorrow. I did get a new computer, but they didn’t have the same kind, so I (the least mechanically inclined person you’ll probably ever meet) has to install it or put her bike on the car and drive it over to the shop in Indiana.

Good to see you back on the bike. You certainly covered a fair amount of outdoor chores in five days! New roads are always fun – I look forward to hearing of new adventures this season.

Thank you. I’m hoping the rain is out of here by Tuesday so I can ride. I guess I CAN ride in the rain and I HAVE RIDDEN in the rain on many loaded tours, but I don’t CHOOSE to leave a dry house for a day ride in the rain. Old joints would not be happy if I did.
