in search of an unusual wall

After a visit from our eldest son and one of his girls, I was able to get for an hour or so.

It has taken me more than a little while to remember where I had seen the following.

This thatched top garden wall is to be found in the village of Appleford, a few miles from Abingdon and down a side lane to the local parish church in the village.

Looking back, even the entrance gate is thatched, plenty of puddles after yesterday’s heavy rain.

Appleford parish church.

Enjoyable trip out, even if it was a little chilly, it didn’t help that I was a little under dressed.

Distance – 12 miles.

Journey – Solo.

Bike – Dawes Galaxy

Beautiful thatch-topped wall. I think thatching is quite the wonder. Something we do not have over here in the states and that I loved seeing on my few trips in Europe, esp the UK.

Yes most unusual to thatch a wall, I’ve only ever seen two, but sadly I can’t remember where I saw the second one. I seem to remember Seaside Janet mentioning a thatched cottage in her local area.

Very unusual wall, is there a reason why they thatched it? Looks like some sort of netting over it as well.
Great photo, and very nice bicycle!

Not sure why it’s thatched, most unusual.
The wire mesh/netting is to keep out birds and rodents.
The bike a Dawes Galaxy Classic I had from new a number of years ago, the only original bits from memory are frame and forks, handlebars and stem, seat post and rear rack.
So much went wrong with it an awful lot had to be replaced.

Thatched walls as well – the dedication to maintenance of the roofs and walls is amazing. I am not sure I would have the patience, even if I had the money, to properly look after such things!

Em, thatched walls indeed, expensive to install, maintain and insure.

When at school in the early ’60s only the flash kids had a Dawes. And now I find out they were just riding problems!!

Interestingly Dawes only produced the model I brought for one year, I think that speaks volumes for their selection of components.
