January Challenge #5 (Maybe)

(This is a s t r e t c h)

A mineral is defined as a solid of inorganic origin with a constant chemical composition and definite physical properties

Rocks are defined as a solid composed of one or more minerals

Therefore, ice may be considered a mineral and/or a rock composed of a single mineral?

(Ill leave that issue to those far more intelligent to figure out)  🙂

At any rate, I thought these icicle-like forms along the North Fork were interesting whether they are rock, mineral, or just frozen water

Formed when the water was at a higher level and froze in the cold air as the water receded??

Difficult to see between the large gap in the spokes

Very much enjoy all the entries you all have provided -- great to see the everyday cycling venues. Being in eastern Illinois, scenery certainly isn't our forte, but oh well, the roads are normally quiet. Look forward to more and more entries from all of you, I do have a few over on BL -- in Bill's Day Rides, and one journal.

I’ll buy it. I certainly know from experience that ice is as hard as a rock.

Whether or not the judges buy it is another story. Even if they don’t, it doesn’t matter. Not every good post has to be part of a monthly challenge. Your icicle pictures are unique and they stand on their own.

      Awww thanks!
If nothing else, it again shows the things we see cycling that cars roaring over that bridge completely miss.

Looks like things have been just a tad “nippy on the ole bippy” up your way — as they used to say on Chicago radio.

February is approaching —- Ogre Time!!!

Love those icicles! That’s why, or one of the reasons, we ride our bikes – to see things like that.

Are you sure you didn’t supersaturate the water with sugar, then make rock candy? 😉

I love the icicles Rich — or rock candy if you prefer ;’-). I enjoy all your posts, photos and stories. Daily, or near daily, riding brings us such treasures for the eyes and mind. Thanks for the posts you make to share with us.

Well, I guess water has the same chemical composition, even if doesn’t always have the same physical state…. um, really, it doesn’t matter. Those are really cool icicle shots. And not something I would EVER EVER get a photo of where I live. Great that you could sneak in a ride and take advantage of a break in the weather, too.
