Of the 10 or so pictures I took in October, almost all of them are flags and NONE of them are birds.  Obviously this last minute challenge is a dirty trick of the highest order, but I’m the kind of guy who turns lemons into something that resembles lemonade.  So the way I saw it, between the time I discovered the challenge and the time I had to be home to hand out Halloween treats, I still had a good five hours to get out on my bike and find some birds.

Making things a little more difficult is the fact that most of the birds in Minnesota have headed south for the winter.  And it sure feels like winter this morning.  (29-degrees F)  Oh well, the scarcity of birds and the cold air are just two more lemons for me to use in concocting some bird picture lemonade.

There were even fewer birds out there than I thought there would be.  In fact (you might not believe this) I searched and searched and found the very last bird in all of Minnesota.

A clearly identifiable crow

It hung around just long enough for me to get a picture and then he, too, flew off to a warmer climate.

That’s my watery, lemonade-like substance for this challenge.  Time to start searching for some November kids.

Hi. My name is Greg and I ride my bike a lot. That is to say, I ride my bike almost every day. I go on long rides and short rides. Sunny rides, cloudy rides, and rainy rides. I like commuting, errand-running, day-tripping, overnighting, and touring on my bike. I ride on city streets, highways, gravel, single track, and snow with equal enthusiasm. Sometimes I ride fast and sometimes I ride slow. I try to keep my feet on the pedals at stop lights and I do not dismount when I hop up on a curb. I have a roadie bike, a mountain bike and a touring bike. I try to accept any challenge a bike ride can throw at me without complaint. But I don't like bugs.

Good job! I love crows – one of my favorite birds. And the last bird of the year in Minnesota!

Yup, the very last bird in the entire state. Not bad eh? I like crows too and I’m not exactly sure why. They aren’t raptors like most of my other favorite birds. They’re as common as dirt around here. Their obnoxious “CAW CAW CAW”ing outside my tent has woken me up many times while on bike tours. They aren’t as cool as Griffons. But I think I’ve read that they’re the smartest bird in the bird kingdom. Perhaps I have a case of bird envy.
