Ride of Silence: Santa Rosa

I pedaled downtown to participate in the Ride of Silence. Very disappointing turnout. Five riders plus one youngster on a tag along. But we rode a silent loop around downtown, and our local newspaper sent a reporter and photographer to cover the story.

It’s a shame about the poor turn-out. Maybe with more publicity, the ride will grow and grow over the years to come. I wish it would have been on a weekend. The nearest ride to me was 2 hours away, and I simply can’t do that on a weekday. Even if I took the afternoon off, I would have a long drive in the dark with plenty of kangaroos to get home. I’ll remember the date and see if I can get a local bike shop involved promoting something in a town closer to me next year.
I had never heard of the Ride of Silence until you posted about it, so thanks for that.
There was a Ride in Champaign-Urbana, (Bloomington-Normal too) but no news coverage at all. 🙁
Like Emily, C-U is a bit of a hike for us so regrettably did not participate.
Well, at least you got news coverage. I saw some cameramen at our ride, but haven’t seen anything in the paper or news. (Not that I watch the news.)
It seemed worthwhile to participate even in a tiny ride, and if all else fails I reckon a one-person Ride of Silence to remember fallen bicyclists would be perfectly fine.
By the way, short article and couple of pix in the newspaper this morning:

With your Info we can all advocate for rides next May. I noticed it said third Wednesday in May every year. Like others ours was hours away and we had previous plans. Next year! Glad you went.
Like others have said, I never heard of this ride until you mentioned it. And it’s been going on for sixteen years? I missed the official ride in my area, so I just posted an account of my own personal Ride of Silence. Nice to see you approved of a one-person ride a couple of messages above this one.
I hope the Twin Cities ride did our bike-friendly area proud. The weather was nearly perfect. I guess last year there was rain and thunderstorms, so only 9 people showed up. I see Munich had a pretty good turnout in the rain this year.
Ride of Silence reports are trickling in from all around the planet, including one from the South Pole:
