Rotating radiance?

Do propellers qualify?  They’re spinning too fast to see their radiant pattern, but trust me.

So we landed in Zagreb last night; and other than a few tense interactions, everything went as well as we could have hoped.  The tour is on!

I have to say though that seeing the news of fires erupting along the west coast just as we left makes me feel guilty about being here, and a bit of a jinx.  It’s just the latest in a series of narrow escapes.

About a decade ago, we took a month long autumn tour through Sardinia and Italy, ending up at Cinque Terre.  We had outstanding weather the entire month; but the last day we were there, fires broke out in Cinque Terre just a few miles from us; and the next day torrential rains and flooding overwhelmed the region.

Two years ago, we took a January tour of Hawaii’s Big Island.  A few months later Kilauea erupted massively and the roads we were just riding over were buried in lava.

Last spring in southern Italy, we took a day boat tour to visit the volcanic island of Stromboli.  Perhaps two weeks later Stromboli experienced a massive eruption and folks were jumping into the sea.

I’m sure there’s a message here, other than the obvious one that the members of Team Anderson have had way more good luck than they’re entitled to.  Another one is probably to not follow in our footsteps too closely.  Keep your distance!

Good luck and good heath, everyone!

This is just a placeholder for now. I’ll add a real description when I get more time.

Good to see you made it, and gosh, I hope all that luck hasn’t run out, too! The virus is a sneaky, pervasive thing. Good luck, ride safe and stay well.

Thanks for the benediction, Em. We hope our luck holds too of course, and will do our best to keep the virus at bay. It helps that we’re both pretty antisocial and crowd-averse, but of course it’s everywhere now – including where we just came from. At least over here there don’t seem to be unmasked madmen coughing on strangers as a political statement. We’ve probably improved our odds of making it through until a vaccine appears. I feel pretty stubborn, which I’m sure will help – I’m bound and determined to stay alive long enough to see our gangster government behind bars where they belong.

Have you ever seen the Twilight Zone episode where William Shatner is an airplane passenger and he sees a gremlin out on the wing trying to destroy one of the engines? That’s what I was reminded of when I saw the propeller blade flying off your airplane.

Sadly, my memory is so terrible that I don’t remember any of the plots – just the music and Rod Sterling’s voice. I love the concept though. I should see if I can find it on YouTube.

Back when I used to fly a fair amount, I used to love to get a window seat over the wing so I could watch things happen with the flaps, ailerons, thrust reversers, etc. I liked it on jets, but it always freaked me out a little on prop planes, because I always envisioned a propeller blade letting loose. Kinda like in that photo…

It freaks me out a bit also, and especially on the final flight. The propeller was spinning straight outside our window and I kept invisioning a blade breaking free and slicing through the wall of the fuselage.

All the best in Croatia, look forward to following along and wash those hands and avoid people too.

    • By: Scooter Posted: August 22, 2020

Thanks for the wishes and advice, Lednar. Washing my hands still feels pretty unnatural, but we’ll be masked and keeping our distance, that’s for sure.
