Schultz Pass

I’m still undertaking day rides from basecamp in Flagstaff while my ace support crew backpacks the Grand Canyon. Today I’m riding a road I’ve already travelled by bicycle.

In 2015, when RJ and I biked to the Grand Canyon, we went the long way around from Flagstaff to Bonito campground in Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument via Schultz Pass Road. In order to accomplish a similar ride today, I needed to drive the direct route from Flagstaff to the national monument, park there, ride up the pass, then return to the Forester. Four years ago RJ and I managed to ride that rough, unpaved, unmaintained road on fully loaded Surly Long Haul Truckers. I had no idea about it’s current condition, except that apparently the road remained closed for the winter, and there might be some snow on it. I figured the Ogre was my ace in the hole. Plus, I could always turn around at any point and bail out.

They call me Old Grumble-Face. I have no idea why they do that....

    Another beautiful ride!
I do remember the ’15 journal, written in the 3rd person iirc.

Yes, that road looked just a bit rough, but the views over a very obvious volcanic landscape were inspiring 🙂
