Spring in January? – Monthly Challenge Clouds

No, it is definitely not spring yet although it was a few degrees warmer today than yesterday. I somehow expected some spring-like vegetation in the Botanical Garden and since it was a bit warmer and there was no snow on the bike paths, Janos and I cycled there. This winter cycling is something new; last year when it got cold, I didn’t get on my bike for at least three months. They say it’s all about wearing the right clothing, so I bought the top-quality winter mittens, changed my attitude and have been cycling.

In the Botanical Garden there wasn’t even a tiny blossom on the witch hazel. I did see the tips of what I think will be snowdrops poking through the layers of dry leaves and snow, though. Perhaps in a few weeks … When it started to rain, we went into the Botanical Garden’s cafe and had an early lunch along with many other inveterate botanical garden visitors who got caught in the rain.

When we get there, we warm up in the greenhouse.

The flower beds in winter sleep

We take refuge in the cafe.

It was raining and the cafe soon filled.

We take a short walk and discover a bit of green.

Our bikes are waiting.

I'm a US born ex-pat, having lived most of my adult life in Munich, Germany. I have three kids and eight grandchildren - so I'm pretty old. Cycling, photography and walking are my favorite things.

Good for you for getting out the door, Suzanne. As long as it’s not too cold and icy, I’m surprised at how much I like a short ride in the winter. It’s such a different time to be on your bike, special in a whole different way.

Great idea to warm up in the greenhouse! Australia doesn’t quite have the same distinct 4 seasons as the Northern Hemisphere, and sometimes I do miss ‘counting time’ and the progress of the year in the ways that you can back in the US (and Europe).

Nice ride — as long as the roads are clear its a matter of temperature/wind for riding. Cold is one thing, but cold plus wind is a whole other matter.
Cool photo of the cactus garden in the greenhouse.
Is that Olympic Tower in the photo?

Hi Rich, that’s Munich’s TV tower, in front of it the Olympic soccer sradium and further in the background is the BMW tower.
