The Devonian Ride

Last weekend had perfect weather, so the guys and I got out for the first time in six weeks. We had a grand time. The ride had all the things we love – geology, great scenery, low-no traffic roads, an empty campsite and great riding conditions. More than once we thought about just not going home…. Read about it here.

Nerdy chick in Australia who loves to ride and is accompanied by the crew: 'The Commander' Verne and the 'Mental Health Specialist' Kermit.

Great read and photos, as always. Glad you could get out for an enjoyable ride after the heat wave.
Thanks for the geological tour — there are some dikes in Judith Basin Montana that are/were the source of the Yogo Sapphires. Any gemstones in those dikes do you know?
Ayr-Way — there is a blast from the past — out of Indianapolis werent they? Had a store in Danville, IL — back in the late Devonian as I recall. 😉 Morphed into Target today.
Really enjoyed your wheeled photos — wish I had similar.

I am not aware of there being gemstones in the dykes. I don’t have a good map that would show where to look for the dykes on public land to have a look. However, the granite emplaced around the same time has mineralised deposits in this area of tin, gold and silver. Nearby is gold and molybdenum. There is no longer any silver or tin mining, but there is a renewed interest in gold not too far from where we were riding. I don’t think they’ve ever really gone after the molybdenum as I don’t think it is easy to get to and probably not in large enough quantities to be profitable.

Yes, Ayr-way became Target, but even Target has left my hometown. I don’t think there are any Sears or Kmarts left (used to be two in town) either. Just Walmart. My hometown is a really sad place these days – it’s unlikely I’ll ever go back to visit. My dad searched for early bike photos for me while he was sorting through photos to use in a slideshow for my parents’ 50th Anniversary party… but he didn’t find any early ones. I did have a lot of different wheeled things to ride on as a kid – not seen here… a red Huffy tenspeed, a red Huffy bmx bike, a Le Run, a Roller Racer and a couple of different scooters.

So good to see you out on the road! Hopefully you’re finally past the worst of the heat for another year, and it’s really great to see that your health is trending upward!

Yes, I hope we are past the worst of the heat. It looks like it will be one of those years where it is hot right through March (it was 37C today), but hopefully those strings of 40s are done. My health does continue to improve. It is incredibly SLOW, but when I look back to a year ago, I can see quite a bit of progress. I hope I can say the same in a year’s time again!

Nostalgia, geology….. your post had a little bit of everything, even including a big hair photo, alas I’m finished in that department now. Looks like you’re on the way to recovery too, small steps but heading in the right direction. That poor redwood looked a bit homesick, must be missing the fog and cold I bet.

My friends and family would tell you that ‘big hair’ was preferable to ‘boy hair’ which I had from age 7 to 13. I still think short hair is better because it never gets in your eyes 🙂
