Winter Solstice 40 Degrees North (Photos Added)

Cloudy Day 🙁 — doesnt look like much of the rest of the country fared much better

(Red dot is approximate location of Vermilion County, Illinois)

So — good thing there was a Plan B in case this exact thing happened

Plan B: Take advantage of the latest possible clear sunset close to the solstice!!

Comparison Review:    This was the Equinox on September 23rd — sun setting due west.

Winter Solstice

Very Near the actual solstice date, same location as Equinox photo

The sun sets 23.5 degrees south of its Equinox location

View Southwest as sun sinks below the horizon

2 Days following the Solstice skies finally clear

Little, if any, northward movement of the sun so far

Very much enjoy all the entries you all have provided -- great to see the everyday cycling venues. Being in eastern Illinois, scenery certainly isn't our forte, but oh well, the roads are normally quiet. Look forward to more and more entries from all of you, I do have a few over on BL -- in Bill's Day Rides, and one journal.

You can never trust those clouds. I’ll be having a white Christmas on beach sand.

White beach sand works for me!!

Well, it kind of figured thats what would happen cloud-wise, so a little fudge factor was involved, but still shows the relationship. Might clear up in the next day or two — operative word ‘might’.
We are under flight paths out of Chicago and an E/W route, so contrails are pretty common.

When you were in Montana —- could you sometimes hear jet aircraft but never see them? When we were there we were told they were military jets way too high to be visible.

I learn a lot from you Rich. If we lived closer I would enjoy riding with you and learn even more. Thanks for the pics.

Love the way you visualized the path of the sun on the horizon with your bike! Inspiring.
    Happy Holidays!
