Sonoma County was inundated by torrential downpour for days. Santa Rosa received the most rainfall in a single day going back all the way to the earliest records kept in the 1800s. Rivers, creeks, and waterways overflowed. Streets, roads, and highways flooded. Residents along the Russian River received mandatory evacuation orders. Hundreds of miles away … Continue reading "Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument"

Yep. 500+ kilometers in February even though it only has 28 days and on the last 2 days I can’t cycle – involved in showing family members the delights of Tasmania. More details can be found here – TC Blog
So far this month we’ve received approximately double the average monthly rainfall for February. More is forecast to arrive within the next day or two. Although I plan to get the heck out of town and head for warmer, drier climes before the rain returns, I figure I should take advantage of today’s pleasant weather. … Continue reading "Olompali and Rush Creek"
It’s been nearly three months since we’ve done our “normal” ride. You know the one…..down to Pebble Beach and back. With all of the rain and wind we have had the last few weeks there has been a lot of damage down there and we wanted to see it first hand. We were going yesterday … Continue reading "Storm Report February 2019 Central Coast"
Greetings once again from the Winter Wonderland I call home. For most of the previous Cycle365 Monthly Challenges, I limited myself to one or two posts. I sure am making up for that this month, aren’t I? And now I’m back to irritate you with ANOTHER gosh-darn weather report. Oh, oh! I only made it … Continue reading "MONTHLY CHALLENGE OVERKILL"
I am in Kota Iskandar for a few days. That massive development in the state of Johor, just across the Johor Strait from Singapore. This is the view of the Strait of Johor from the 22nd floor apartment I am staying in. Today I rode to Tanjung Piai, which is the southernmost point of mainland … Continue reading "RIDE # 32: 20 FEBRUARY 2019"
Hello Cycle 365ers. A belated Happy Chinese New Year, and very best wishes for the Year of the Pig. Three friends and I did a credit card tour just before Chinese New Year. Read about it here.
By the standards of Santa Rosa, the last few weeks have been especially stormy, wet, and cold, including unusual amounts of snow at the highest elevations and overflowing waterways at the lowest elevations. Santa Rosa, Sonoma County, the North Bay, and the greater Bay Area have all suffered localized flooding to some degree, and multiple … Continue reading "Laguna"
There’s some weather in today’s post, but nothing exceptional – just another overcast, coolish day with enough of a break in the rain to lure me out the door for a ride out to Sauvie Island on a crane hunt. So, not really a February challenge entry. There are still a few days left to … Continue reading "The Nelson House"
Last weekend had perfect weather, so the guys and I got out for the first time in six weeks. We had a grand time. The ride had all the things we love – geology, great scenery, low-no traffic roads, an empty campsite and great riding conditions. More than once we thought about just not going … Continue reading "The Devonian Ride"
During some winters, California as a whole receives little rain and snow. That’s a problem for plants and animals, but good for bicycling. During some winters, California as a whole receives much rain and snow. That’s a problem for bicycling, and sometimes a problem for everyone else. This winter has seen no shortage of rain … Continue reading "Down in the Flood"
Well don’t expect any snow forts, icicles or snow drifts here…coz it’s hot, hot, hot and the middle of summer. It hasn’t even snowed here in winter since the last ice age. We’re too close to the equator, too close to sea level and the southern hemisphere doesn’t have the large land masses. I went … Continue reading "February Challenge – results of weather"
My challenge to self is to ride between Melbourne and Adelaide mainly camping along the way. Ride with GPS says it’s a bit over 1,000 kilometers with quite a few thousand meters to climb along the way. I expect the figures to be wrong as generally I find the longer the planned route the less … Continue reading "My Challenge (to self) of 2019"
Indeed, I am having fun with this month’s weather challenge. Certainly I have fun showing off the weather in my part of the world, but I’m also having fun reading about all of the crazy weather the rest of you Cycle365-ers are enjoying–and trust me, I read every one of your posts. I don’t always … Continue reading "It’s Not About The Weather, It’s About The Fun"
I think we’ve figured out that you can’t really photograph cold or heat. Well, it turns out you can’t photograph perfect weather either. If you could… here it is. After 5.5 weeks of insane heat and then a week of high heat and high humidity we had two perfect days over the weekend (which I … Continue reading "You can’t photograph perfect weather either"
Or, as we like to call it up here, Snowpocalypse. After warnings of a killer one to three inches of snow though, all we got last night was a light dusting. An insignificant showing compared to our friends almost anywhere else in the northern hemisphere right now. I’m almost embarrassed to submit it, but for … Continue reading "February challenge: whiteout in PDX"
Other than taking my picture next to a thermometer, which I’ve already done in the past, I really don’t know how to convey coldness. Snow is easy. So is fog and ice and slush and sleet. But today it is bright and sunny and spectacular. Simply putting on bulky layers of clothing will not convince … Continue reading "COLD Is Not Photographable"
The weather has been sunny and dry for over a month now. The land in the centre of Tassie is coming parched. My trike is shown as a shadow cast by the early morning sun – is this an acceptable challenge entry?
It seldom snows in Sonoma County. I’ve lived here since 1984, and I’ve seen snowflakes in Santa Rosa twice, with total accumulation of less than half an inch. Roughly once per decade, the higher elevations around the Bay Area — above one or two thousand feet — receive an inch or two of snow. Guess … Continue reading "Blizzard on Bald Mountain"
I wasn’t going to write up this ride, which is my New Normal. About 19mi from home to Asilomar and back. I love the ride most of the time. I get a few hills and a lot of beautiful views…… I was on my way back home after Asilomar I saw the views of the … Continue reading "Central Coast Has Snow Too………."
On the weekend it snowed for 24 hours straight. I didn’t go out in that, well not on my bike anyway. But I was surprised the next day how quickly the roads were cleared and even the bike paths were pretty good so I ventured forth.
The 50 year old Seattle Viaduct will be destroyed. A new tunnel into town will take its place. It is a HUGE deal around here. The tunnel opens today (2/4) for auto traffic. This weekend there were 30,000 walkers/runners allowed for part of it on Saturday, and 12,000 cylists to ride the entire tunnel and … Continue reading "Weather … after an historical ride"
I hadn’t planned to go for a ride in the rain today, but then I saw Greg’s post. If he can venture out in wintry Gopher State weather, how can I vegetate on the sofa with a bottomless mug of tea and a box of glazed doughnuts? If he can pedal through the slushy remains … Continue reading "Traction in the Rain"
A person could be forgiven for taking one look at the featured picture and thinking something like this: “That doesn’t look like Fourth of July Weather to me.” But this post isn’t about that person, it’s about ME, and to ME it feels like a hot summer day. MY town has emerged from the Polar … Continue reading "FOURTH OF JULY WEATHER ON SUPER BOWL SUNDAY"
When I woke at 7.15am, it was already hot. And windy. And humid. No thanks, I’ll give a ride a miss today. As the temperature rose and the humidity made all the dead rats in the walls stink, I closed up the house and worked on the modules for the online course I’m doing. Boring- … Continue reading "Thunder – wind – heat"
Well, it is and it isn’t it’s about the weather, but it’s not a submission for the February weather challenge because the ride was a day early to qualify. I’ll just have to hope that there’s some weather worth writing about in the coming month. The weather was spectacular yesterday here in Portland, making me … Continue reading "It’s not about the weather"
Over night snow pretty much bought the southern counties of the UK to a standstill, schools and colleges closed, public transport reduced or non-existent. By early afternoon the snow had stopped here and a slight flaw had set in, so it was time to get out and take a couple of photo’s. Entrance to Abingdon … Continue reading "NOT POLAR VORTEX"
Last year I had zero rides in January and one ride in February. This year, the first half of the month we were in Spain, but between January 16 and January 31, I cycled on 13 days. Come on folks, let’s hear that applause! The rides weren’t long but I decided anything would count as … Continue reading "My Rides in January – Cycle Days Challenge"
