Having surprised myself by completing this year’s challenge, I present a round up for 2020 CLC. I do owe a big Thank you to Suzanne who encouraged me that I could do it with some creative thinking ;’-)
When all my favorite bike routes are blockaded due to self-isolation stay at home quarantine lockdown shelter in place shutdowns, there’s one loop that’s always available. Today I dressed up for the ride and chose my musical accompaniment with care.
So the mile through Dayville was special too, but not quite in the same way as the previous 44 miles of our Picture Gorge ride were. It’s definitely one we won’t forget. Sorry about the featured image, but the hospital wouldn’t let Rocky bring her Straggler to accompany her as a comfort bike. Randy Newman … Continue reading "In Dayville"
I knew we would have some sun this morning and maybe even lasting for much of the day. Since I wanted o complete the challenge, I packed my pre-bought tea and food with the intent to stop along the way. This is a similar look for the table that would be set for the two … Continue reading "CLC 2020 #7"
For the third straight day we have decent cycling weather. Still chilly though, so we stay with the low elevation and continue west from Dayville, the town we ended at yesterday. This stretch of Highway 26, still a part of the TransAmerica Trail, features non-stop dramatic scenery, highlighted by the two mile ride through Picture … Continue reading "Picture Gorge"
I have been riding regularly and have not been checking in here to read everyone’s posts until yesterday. Will be catching up with reading those with interest. We continue to Stay in Place at home and have not ventured to any store even if it is open. My friend Cindy picked up helmet lights that … Continue reading "CLC 2020 #6"
I took this photo on my last ride, but didn’t post it because I took the photo on the fly and the gate wasn’t centered (I was afraid if I stopped they’d send out a malitia team for taking a photo). Looking back over my photos and considering this whole Covid19 pandemic outbreak, I think … Continue reading "This Sums It Up…"
Approximately one day ago, a major dude was planning another one of his daily bicycle rides. He didn’t particularly care that rain and thunderstorms were in the forecast since there were no storms going on at that particular time. Even so, he donned his rain gear just in case, though he knew full well that … Continue reading "THE LAST DUDE IN MINNESOTA–A Graphic Novel"
It feels like we’re in Dreamland, here in our idyllic little vacation cottage in John Day. Or living in a different century for awhile. John Day: population 1,700, one stoplight, a reasonably well stocked grocery store, a gas station, a hospital, snow-capped mountains only a few miles away. If you ignore the numerous very conservative, … Continue reading "In Dreamland"
Two cruise liners quarantined in the port and one waiting off the coast. Yesterday I decided I needed a long cycle so off I headed to the coast and return. At the moment Fremantle has a few cruise liners who want to off load their passengers, some who have the virus. This happened in Sydney … Continue reading "A social distancing cycle to Fremantle"
Last weekend the guys and I got in an overnight ride and a couple purchases for the Cycle Life Challenge. I did several 10.5 hour days this past week at work, so I didn’t get the chance to write anything up until now. Those of us that do still have a job are working our … Continue reading "Cycle life challenge – purchase 2 and 3"
Of all the cycling I did in those years between 1981 and 1987, a few tours stand out as being exceptional. My tour with Werner to Italy, Slovenia and Austria was certainly memorable, and somehow now almost seems incredible. But I can assure you, the story is true. So bear with me while I extoll … Continue reading "Bicycle Memories: Believe It or Not"
I live in the exurbs between Washington DC and Baltimore MD. From my house I can do many road rides as loops of varying lengths, depending on how much time I have, how much or little traffic I feel like encountering, etc. I have one short ten mile loop through local neighborhood streets and around … Continue reading "When a Boring Ride is Not So Boring"
Rachael and I haven’t listened to much of our favorite music over the last two years. We don’t take any music with us when we’re on the road, and all of our CD’s are packed away in storage. So it was a real treat to drive down to John Day a few days ago and … Continue reading "Save the country"
More of the same I am afraid. A little trip around Longford and a visit to the shop. This time the local Bottlo to purchase the weekend supply of IPA. How are you all going in this time of restrictions? We are knocking over home type tasks that have been wanting for some time. Cleaned … Continue reading "CLC #4. Longford, TAS"
All the parks in Sonoma County where I regularly hike and bike are closed as part of our pandemic lockdown. I decided to take a look at a couple of the nearest parks. I knew I couldn’t get into them, but I wanted to investigate, trying various entrances. Here’s what I found. It must be … Continue reading "Parks Closed: Tour d’Apocalypse"
The next trip I have on record was in September 1981. The set-up was still basically the same. I mentioned in my diary that I wouldn’t need to buy any new gear since I was well equipped after my trip to Italy in the spring. MORE HERE
Now in the days of the shutdown I have been cycling less. Sitting at home my thoughts go back in time to earlier cycling days. I rummage through the boxes of unsorted pictures and leaf through photo albums – all from the pre-digital days and a bit chaotic. When traveling in the days of film … Continue reading "Bicycle Memories"
Well there’s a title, I never thought I’d write – Tar Signatures, but nonetheless, that’s what my last ride was about a week ago. I’m getting a little ahead of myself though…first things first…congratulations to the first cyclist to cross the imaginary “competitive” finish line of this year’s CLC challenge (of which, I’ve accomplished exactly … Continue reading "Tar Signatures"
My last ride was ten days ago. Let’s ignore that recent jaunt up and down the car park ramps. It was time to break down the fences. The roads around where I live are almost deserted now. So I did nine loops plus a couple of excursions onto the Ampang – Kuala Lumpur Elevated Highway … Continue reading "RMO Ride #1"
Yesterday Sonoma County ordered all parks to close due to an excess of congregating by self-isolated, locked down, sheltered in place, stay at home folks. When closing parks, that meant every state park, county park, regional park, city park, etc, plus every open space, schoolyard, playground, and multi-use path in the county. Wait. What? Paths? … Continue reading "Closed: Tour de Lockdown"
It could be said that I am excessively competitive. I do tend to turn almost everything into some kind of competition. Usually I just compete with myself and try to do something better or faster or weirder than I’ve ever done it before. I also compete against other people in games, sports, crossword puzzles, and … Continue reading "CLC Ride #7: River Views, Paint Spills, Miscellaneous Pleasantries . . . and VICTORY!"
The plan had been that we would fly down to Elk Grove, CA and be with Lucy for her 8th birthday — had to cancel those plans. We had bought the card and stamp earlier so sent off the Birthday card to Grand Lucy for her 8th birthday. Not sure when we will get to … Continue reading "CLC 2020 #5"
Way back in the day before pirate radio in the UK, us kids had these new-fangled things called transistor radios. If you took the back off the radio, de-waxed a couple of bits and turned a couple of uncovered screws you could pick up .. Radio Luxembourg. It faded in and out but some nights … Continue reading "My take on the music challenge"
There really is a place that’s unofficially called “Cowtown” and it’s right here within the city limits of MY Town. It’s about the only part of Hastings that I haven’t shown you over and over and over. Maybe that’s because, deep down, I fear Cowtown. It’s considered the bad side of town. “The wrong side … Continue reading "CLC RIDE #6: The Ride to Eternal Glory Leads Through Cowtown"
Each day that we manage to get a ride in feels like it could well be our last for awhile, so we try to savor it. We know how lucky we are to still be able to enjoy what feels like a privilege now. Today’s ride up the Banks-Vernonia Rail Trail to Vernonia Lake was delicious … Continue reading "Vernonia Lake"
We ran out of biscuits, so a trip to the local shop was needed. This simple ride was extended to a 12 kilometre trip on varying surfaces just because I can. I trialled an advanced concept (for me) in OSMO video making. The idea is to use ND filters to balance light coming in so … Continue reading "CLC #3 – Longford and Surrounds"
One of the bike rides we took from our campsite at Fort Casey State Park (now closed ;’-( ) brought us to the town of Coupeville. It can be a little quiet off season, but often is a bustling seaside town. We have been here many time and never seen it quite this ‘lonely’.
I hate to risk further swelling Greg’s already oversized ego, but I think his idea for a monthly challenge was brilliant and timely. If you’re like me, you’re finding it therapeutic and comforting to open up these posts and listen to such a variety of music. Unless anyone thinks otherwise, I propose that we continue … Continue reading "Challenge of the month, April 2020: more of the same, please!"
I did not anticipate that I would get a CLC in today. And I know I am getting them in rather close together and not spacing them, but I have to do them when the occasion presents itself and when weather allows. Susan and I had taken a nice bike ride and enjoyed yet another … Continue reading "CLC 2020 #4"
After taking two days off the saddle to keep pressure off her injured elbow, Rocky was ready to roll. We drove out to Sauvie Island to join the masses, surprised to find that we didn’t have the whole island to ourselves. I’ve never seen so many hikers and bikers out there, as everyone is looking … Continue reading "Rocky returns"
Rachael’s fortunately doing fine after her brush with disaster. She slept poorly last night because she couldn’t lie comfortably, but today she doesn’t have any signs of injury other than the scrapes she walked off with yesterday. She took the day off her bike while her abrasions heal up and went for a 12 mile … Continue reading "Date night"
When I put up the CLC2020 post a little over two weeks ago, I could not envision our world changing so much. Thanks COVID-19. I’m so glad to see that folks are still able to get out and do physical-distanced cycling. I thought I could too but well … I’ve got a 93yo mother who … Continue reading "(Cycle) Life is Challenging"
I pedaled out the Greenway and back this morning. Saw quite a few people along the path. This guy is usually very good about social distancing, but it looks like everyone is taking extra precautions.
It’s Autumn. Sometimes summer hangs on well into autumn. This year it loosened it’s grip on day 1 so the cold and COVID-19 eases its way in. Tasmania has closed it’s borders to anyone not Tasmanian. Today a friend from Hobart is attempting to fly back from Hanoi. He has cut his cycling tour from … Continue reading "Cycle Life Challenge #2 : Longford"
I was 15 when this hit the charts. It was the obvious song for my picture. But that was at the end of our ride on our way home. Let’s start at the beginning. We had great weather again and I decided I wanted to meander on some of the little paths through the woods … Continue reading "March Challenge: Cherry Pink and Apple Blossom White"
Wednesday was mostly an errand day for me, as we started preparing to break camp and move on to The Dalles, our next temporary home. This is such a strange and unnerving time, and the first time I’ve had any misgivings about not having our own home. It might be nice to be sheltering in … Continue reading "A near miss for the missus"
[A NOTE FROM THE AUTHOR (ME): I’m fully aware that my last few posts have been too wordy, that is to say, boring. I apologize. To atone for my excessive wordiness, today’s post will be too picture-y instead. I figure that in these times of social distancing, pictures will be less likely to transmit viruses … Continue reading "CYCLE LIFE CHALLENGE RIDE #5: Desolation, Desolation Everywhere"
Between mid-February and today, a lot has happened. One of the things that happened was my purchase of an airline ticket to El Paso for a bike tour. Nice! Another thing that happened was ME bringing my bike to my most trusted mechanic for a pre-tour tune-up. My most trusted mechanic is my brother, who … Continue reading "CYCLE LIFE CHALLENGE #4: A Big Purchase With Real Money"
We didn’t buy anything, because the Butteville Store is closed for the season or the duration. I haven’t included a song, because I don’t know how to upload one. How are folks doing this? How-to instructions would be welcome. So, our ride through French Prairie is not a challenge ride of any kind. Still though, … Continue reading "French Prairie"
These are the spring days we have been waiting for. The sun is shining, the wind is moderate and the temps are up to around 15°C. The coming days will be the same. I had the routes planned and ready to upload onto my Garmin for the first overnight tour of the year. It was … Continue reading "CLC Spring 2020/2: Beautiful Bavaria"
March 6 Janos planned a nice loop so, although it was windy, we thought let’s go anyway. We have e-bikes, don’t we? By the time we got to Unterbrunn, about 6 km, we decided it best to turn back and not cycle through the woods ahead. We didn’t fancy an encounter with a falling branch … Continue reading "CLC Spring 2020/1: A Windy Day"
I will count this one for the challenge as we rode from and to our campsite and could do that because we had extended our stay for another two nights. My economic contribution is the fee for the campsite. We had another sunny day to enjoy more of Whidbey This calm and peaceful private lake… … Continue reading "CLC 2020 #3"
I don’t know if I have done this correctly this time — I seem to forget how I do it each time I try!! Here is the photo to accompany it ;’-) Well look at me — three challenges in one day, and with just a little WiFi from Hot Spot!! IF this one works.
I cannot say that I will complete all 7 of the challenge outings, but may as well count this one ;’-) Susan and I biked into Coupeville, had a picnic with the sack lunches we brought with us. We had bought the lunch fixin’s previously, so I guess that counts as contributing to the economy … Continue reading "CLC 2020 #2"
As I suspected, today’s ride on the actual Saint Patrick’s Day Holiday would have not decorations to find. I had collected a cache of them on an earlier ride near home. Now to see if I can upload them in less than an hour, from my hot spot connection. In case it looks like they … Continue reading "HOLIDAY RIDE"
Today’s cold ride to Powell Butte surprises me by having just enough snow to craft a small snowman at its summit. I’ve checked with the Rules Committee, and they’ve assured me that it’s fine to post another snowman for Greg. With it so cold today, it might as well still be February anyway. Also, I … Continue reading "Powell Butte"
With every thing now closed, except for grocery, pharmacy and take out windows, and (I can only guess) soon asking for older people like me to isolate ourselves, local purchases will not be possible for a while. I will self-postpone this challenge for when we come out on the other side of this scourge. Though … Continue reading "CLC ON HOLD FOR ME"
The Indian Pacific Wheel Ride starts in about 4 days. This is the self-supported endurance race from Perth to Sydney. This is the ride Mike Hall was killed in outside Canberra in 2017. I know a person riding the Indipac this year. We did our PhDs at the same time and graduated together in 2011. … Continue reading "For the dot watchers and self-isolated…."
Not a joke. The governor of California today issued a statewide guideline instructing all persons 65 years old or older to self-isolate at home until further notice. That would include me (and my ace support crew). Apparently this “guideline” will not be enforced by officers of the law, but elderlies such as myself are nevertheless … Continue reading "Self-Isolation"
My first couple of rides for this challenge showcased the miserly side of my personality. With both rides combined, I hadn’t even contributed ten measly bucks to the local economy. Today I felt like I should do something a little more substantial, not only to bolster MY Town’s businesses, but also to ensure that The … Continue reading "CYCLE LIFE CHALLENGE #3: My Big Time Shopping Spree"
A beautiful Sunday. After the recent rains we tried to cycle a loop not involving too many dirt paths but that would take us to some new areas. Our first stop was to admire these horses out in the paddocks after probably being confined in their stalls much of the winter. This must be horse … Continue reading "Hi Ho, Silver!"
I waited for the 32 degrees to warm up just a touch before doing a solo neighborhood ride. At mid-morning there it was — 36 degrees! We’re a third of the way through March and I still haven’t come up with that perfect tune yet. And I can’t claim any coffeeneuring credit for today’s short ride either, Since I didn’t have time to stop for coffee or buy anything. And I hardly did any biking to speak of, so today’s tree … Continue reading "Unchallenged in March"
A few years ago in March, my brother unexpectedly passed away. My life is filled with many happy memories of time we spent together. We shared a common love of humor, adventures, and sunsets. As much as I enjoy Tolay Lake Regional Park, it takes at least 45 minutes to drive there. That means I don’t get there too often because when heading for a park I usually opt for something closer. Also, Tolay—with practically no shade—tends to be very hot in the summer and—with dirt ranch “roads”—tends to … Continue reading "Tour de Tolay"
For my CLC Ride #1 I decided to take a trip to Launceston and buy a Trangia Triangle. What is it? A mini support and windshield for a Trangia stove burner. I’m grateful to Suzanne for reminding me that Sunday was International Women’s Day. Fortunately I was home at the time and the nearest woman was used … Continue reading "Celebrating IWD 2020"
Lately I’ve been doing a preponderance of comparatively short off-pavement rides. Steep, rough trails make up for distance. Today I decided I wanted to stretch out the mileage a little on pavement. I haven’t been up toward Shiloh Ranch Regional Park or Foothill Regional Park since the wildfires in that area last year. Must be … Continue reading "Yellow"
A sunny day for some beach time. Susan drove the RV down to the beach and I rode my bike down to meet her. I took a bike ride on this day and there were no celebratory decorations anywhere. I was out there to do my part however. And thank you Suzanne for listing all those great books of and by women. I have read a few, and will put those others on my list.
The guys and I got in a good ride on Friday and Saturday. Our journal entry includes a music entry, and you’ll see some delectable baked goods that we purchased for the ride. The purchase actually occurred on the day before the challenge, but the consumption happened on Day 1 of the Cycle Life Challenge, … Continue reading "March Music Challenge and Cycle Life Challenge Purchase 1"
HOLIDAY CHALLENGE: INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY I only learned of this particular holiday this morning when I woke up and saw Suzanne’s inspirational post. Sounds great! I like holiday bike rides. Suzanne has reported that she is unable to use the new Block Editor.
