Well, if even Lednar is going to post a last day of the year ride, I guess I’d better too. First though, I’d like to offer my apology for backing out of active involvement in the community. Somewhere along the middle of our nine month tour of Europe I realized that maintaining that journal every day … Continue reading "Happy New Year from Tucson!"
Hi Cycle 365ers, I’m still alive and cycling like crazy. It’s now Sunday morning, the first day of 2023 and it seems very much like last year so far. Last night my club went for a night cycle with a picnic in Kings Park then a ride around the Christmas lights in the city. It … Continue reading "My last ride of 2022"
Hey — seems like we are ALL getting in a ride for the last day of 2022. Temps here are borderline ’balmy’ for nice long ride. On to our new year wishes for all and each of us to have good riding near or far from home.
With temperatures in the 40s (F), it doesn’t exactly feel like a usual New Year’s Eve here in Vermont. In the photo above, it doesn’t look like a typical idyllic Vermont mid-winter scene; more like our usual muddy March. Still nice to get out for a ride on the last day of the year though. … Continue reading "Last Ride of 2022"
It’s been a great Cycle365 year. Everyone’s pictures were great. Everyone’s bike rides were great. The stories were great. The exchanges of comments were great. Rich’s monthly challenge leadership was great. And all of you Cycle365-ers were great. HERE’S TO AN EVEN GREATER 2023!
Despite the heavy rain this morning I had to go out to keep the streak going. The owner of this property just outside the village dammed this stream up to create the pond in the photo below. The pond covers quite an area. This is the outlet from the pond, yet another unnamed stream. Though … Continue reading "Damp Ride to Finish the Year."
Wishing All the Best to Everyone!! Its been a great time following everyone with their cycling adventures Particularly since everyone has such beautiful places to cycle and interesting things to see Looking forward to 2023 and your riding adventures The year in review/stats
For most of us, riding in January IS a challenge Just back from a ride across town, around the park, and home — first time out in many days — the weather was just uggsome (technical meteorological term) but any ride is better than no ride at all 🙂 Initially, the January Challenge is to … Continue reading "January Challenge(s)"
I opened up Cycle365 this morning and saw DJG’s “Quick Morning Spin” post. The pictures of free-flowing waterfalls reminded me that I should have ridden to our local waterfall for a quick look. That’s what I did this morning. Sure enough, the Vermillion River falls was frozen.
Having to run an errand into the neighbouring village of Steventon, I took the opportunity of taking a few quick photo’s. Steventon Parish church, I think it has a lead roof. Not really sure I would want these in my front garden, fibre glass I think. This house is opposite the church. This is again … Continue reading "Quick Morning Spin"
And let me tell you, it felt great to get back on The Reckless Mr. Bing Bong after about eight days. I think it was my longest cycling hiatus in the last decade and I really have no excuse other than that I seem to have gotten a bit lazy in the last year. Sure, … Continue reading "I’M BACK IN THE BICYCLING BUSINESS"
Managed to get for a couple of hours this morning, bright and sunny though chilly. This is the main river stream with the Culham Lock cutting on the other side of the willows. Looking upstream from the same point, due to the recent heavy rains the river is running high and fast. From here is … Continue reading "Morning Ride"
The Meyer-Guilmet Bicyclette Though it never saw production, this chain drive, and nearly equal-sized-wheels bicycle, predates HJ Lawson’s chain drive and JK Starley’s Rover by at least a decade or more History of the machine HERE Bicycles[edit] Main article: Bicycle chain Chain drive was the main feature which differentiated the safety bicycle introduced in 1885, with its two … Continue reading "The FIRST Safety Bicycle?"
Just a few photo’s from yesterday’s ride, forgot to take the camera this morning. This is Drayton 1066, as it is meant to be seen. Can’t get far enough away to get the whole expanse in. This is Appleford Gravel Pits, another local bird watching haven. The ride to be a very quick 12 miler … Continue reading "Watery Ride"
Wishing you all, dear Friends, a jolly and festive Christmas, and for the New Year everything that a cyclist loves, above all time, health and good weather for many miles on the bicycle.
To start the new season we had 8C/46F, a warm föhn wind was blowing and there were just a few patches of snow here and there in the fields. When we have föhn, the Alps are very clear on the horizon, but too far away for a decent picture. In the picture on top they … Continue reading "Warm Winter Weather"
Wednesday is usually my cycling day of the week, so having missed out last week on a decent ride due to the weather I was more than happy to get out today. I found this cloud formation interesting, until a few minutes later it dumped its load on me, I had to scuttle away to … Continue reading "An Unusual Waterway"
Stormy weather expected for the next couple days, so I got out for a Greg-style ride on the shortest day of the year. I think the solstice here is officially at 4:47 PM, so I’m a few hours early. Note that long shadow above.
After two weeks of sub-freezing temperatures and lots of snow, we had 4C today and the roads looked safe enough for me to get back on my bicycle. In the morning I wasn’t sure that all the paths on my way to tai chi would be cleared, so I didn’t ride there, but in the … Continue reading "Snow free"
Today would have to be just a short trip out due to the heavy rains forecast for later this morning. This rain would be a challenge as it would fall on already frozen ground. This is the pond in the hamlet of Sutton Wick, love the remaining branches on the willow. This is from the … Continue reading "Before The Rains Arrive"
We had a few afternoons that got slightly above freezing this week. As a result, some of our snow melted and the roadsides were getting pretty dirty from cars spewing sand, mud and exhaust fumes. Eight inches of new snow over the last couple of days cured that situation. Not only did the new snow … Continue reading "A World of White"
YAY!! A more than decent day for a bike ride. It was cold still, cold enough to be ready to end my ride shorter than what I do in warmer temps. But I got a lot of challenge items to share ;-). First — as a complete opposite of Greg’s huge human active nativity post … Continue reading "A BIT OF SUNSHINE FOR TODAY’S RIDE ;’-)"
This is The Duchess, she belongs to my wife who no longer rides. Having made a few changes to her, raising the saddle, changing the pedals and fitting lights etc, I now ride her for shopping, and like this morning, trips to our allotments (Lottie). Soon after moving to Drayton 2 1/2 years ago we … Continue reading "A Bicycle for Daily Use"
It’s been snowing on and off for two days, but I wasn’t planning to ride my bike anyway. It’s probably a good thing that I am being forced to walk for a change. I got some pictures for Christmas, too.
HERE is my choice of pictures for the month. I’ll do anything to avoid cars in my photos so one got a major transformation in Photoshop. Guess which one.
It had been 11 days (ELEVEN DAYS!) since I had ridden my bike. Snow, ice, frosty fog, freezing rain each and all kept me ride-less. Yesterday (Friday) was the day ?. I got a few Christmas decorations. Snow is all but gone, helped by the cold rain we have been having. And now morning frosty … Continue reading "FINALLY A RIDE IN DECEMBER"
First of all I want to thank everyone for the interest and positive reaction to my post about the heated gloves. I was thinking this was perhaps just another “wimpy Suzanne has just bought another gadget” thing. But I’m glad I overcame my self-doubts and took a constructive approach. There were some questions that I’ll … Continue reading "The gloves, the hands and the wrist"
It was -1C when I set out at 9:15, initially to deliver a few Christmas cards in Abingdon. White grass on the far bank of the Thames. Whilst sorting out the remaining cards to deliver the Black Headed Gulls (winter plumage) and feral pigeons thought I may have a little something for them, sadly I … Continue reading "Two River Ride"
I bought heated gloves! They have little wires (I think that’s how it works) that go to the fingertips and tip of the thumb, too, and they are powered by a rechargeable battery that is in a zip pocket in the cuff. They are quite thick, perhaps a problem when working my camera with them … Continue reading "Warm hands – kinda"
It was degrees 3C when I left home around 10, headed to Abingdon to see what repairs if any have been carried out on the bridge. This is what I found in Thames Street, it appears that there are a number of scaffold tubes driven into the river bed. The pontoon / floaty thing is … Continue reading "Another Morning Spin"
This is for Suzanne. We bought and had these hand covers delivered just a day ago, and I am yet to try them out (I have said here ad nauseam how icy our roads are) so cannot tell you very much yet. These are made especially for flat handlebars which are what I have. I … Continue reading "COLD HANDS/WARM HANDS"
Dear Santa, I’ve done my best to be a good farmer all year long, But with fertilzer prices SO high . . . . . All I want for Christmas is some NH3 Some NH3 Some NH3 All I want for Christmas is some NH3 Please park it underneath the Christmas tree Thank You Santa!! … Continue reading "All I Want For Christmas is Some NH3"
Santa Claus is coming to town … I got an ear worm after taking that picture. It was pretty cold for my standards, around freezing. Still have to find a better solution for my hands. Nevertheless, I did a little asphalt loop, no muddy paths in the forest these days, and got two pictures. Wasn’t … Continue reading "Santa is coming"
In the spirit of posting a photo that highlights a daily ride, I offer the picture above. Like many of you, the weather here in Vermont has not been very conducive to lots of riding. It’s frequently been chilly, windy and rainy, although not any snow that has accumulated as yet. Today is looking to … Continue reading "Thanksgiving Survivors"
It was just as cloudy, cold, windy, and miserable as it looks Strong wind from the south was generally a crosswind, so would not be all that bad riding west/east Winds predicted up to 40mph and they were getting a good start Nevertheless, Raleigh heads across town to the park to see what might … Continue reading "December Challenge 1"
Cold weather seems to be my challenge. Considering the snow, wind, and ice so many of you are experiencing, I am really ashamed of myself for whining and complaining so much the past days just because it is grey and cold (2 – 4 C) and has rained a bit. No denying it is unpleasant, … Continue reading "Winter Challenge"
Yesterday’s plan to visit the windmill at Brill was thwarted by thick fog. Though I did ride for a couple hours I went without a camera. Still foggy this morning (it would never clear) I had to deliver advent calendars to our two eldest granddaughters, who live in Abingdon. Not a very pleasant prospect as … Continue reading "Murky Morning Ride"
