A Failure and a Gruesome Location

I failed dismally this to find the restored section of the Wilts and Berks Canal located in the village Grove. Its not that big a place but I couldn’t locate it.

Found my way to the village green in West Hanney for a quick bite.

This innocuous looking bridge is called Gallows Bridge on my local maps. It is located about 1/2 mile from where the village green photo was taken. A quick Google search revealed in Hanney’s History Group Summer Newsletter for 1990, that during the reign of King James 1 (1603 – 1625) the village was ordered to construct a ducking pond (beware you witches) and erect a gallows. It believed the gallows were erected in a nearby paddock called Gallows Ham. Failure to undertake these tasks carried a fine of £5, the article never stated whether that was for the village as a whole or for each household, Checking the UK National Archives website it appears that £5 in say 1610 was worth the equivalent of £670 in 2017. I imagine some pretty nasty deeds were carried around this area.

Had to take to photos of this field to get it all in.

Haven’t seen this many sheep in a field for a long time.

Though the sun was out there was a large black cloud headed my way so time to head home. It did rain on before I arrived, I made it back about 3/4 hour before the heavens opened and would do so for the rest of the day. So another great morning out on the bike.

There is an Old Canal View street — wonder if that is it? Assuming I’m in the correct village Grove. Tree lined and can’t see the canal in the Google View In the general area of A417.
Section labeled ‘Canal Disused’ north of A417

Hanging out on Gallows Bridge = not a good idea.

Sheep make a bucolic sight in the field.

I was lead to believe that there was a restored section of canal in that area you highlighted, that is obviously not the case.

    A ducking pond!

So, logically, If she weighs the same as a duck she’s made of wood. And therefore?

The article I read stated they had no idea where the pond was located.

Gallows give me the creeps. Much nicer to see the sheeps.

Nice field of sheep. Those sheep didn’t even look that woolly for a winter coat.
