Announcement: New Users function disabled

I’ve shut off the ability for someone to self-register as a new user on the site. For some reason we’ve been experiencing spam new registrations from porn sites very frequently starting a few days ago. These would come in occasionally in the past and were a minor nuisance to clean up, but now a new one arrives every five minutes or so. I upgraded our spam filter to the latest release hoping that would help, but they just keep coming. I’m tired of getting new registration Emails from users with disgusting names, so I’m at least temporarily shutting the function down. I’ll make a note to reactivate it in a few weeks to see if it’s still an issue.
in the meantime, if you hear of someone who is legitimately trying to join our little club, let me know and we’ll let them in the door.

I guess it’s just our little group for now then. Why is it always porn people who are the most aggressive hackers? I’d almost rather have Russians.
Actually, I don’t doubt that there are some Russian babes in the mix. Most of these are coming from yahoo and hotmail though, which seems fitting.
This could really be a fun comment thread. But out of the immense respect for my fellow members, I’ll refrain, as difficult as it might be.
I guess come summer, having our challenge of the month be a naked bike ride is out then. P.S. Sorry they’ve caused you so much trouble. If they rode a bike, they wouldn’t have as much time for hacking.
No, that would be fine. It’s especially big here in Portland. I’m just getting tired of all the emails.
Thank you for all of the work to keep out the spam and the porn and the…. It’s too bad you couldn’t automatically redirect those emails to some conspiracy site or something!
I like this idea. There’s a long list of monsters I’d be happy to redirect these to, if I had the technical savvy and if I wasn’t afraid it would just end up with an army of Proud Boys lurking outside our door.
Thanks for keeping us ‘safe’ Scott, and knowing how to do all that you do. I do so enjoy our little club and appreciate all that you and Rocky do for us.
You bet. Hopefully we’ll all make it through the winter successfully and we can get out on our bikes more often in the spring.
As Mr Grumby said, there’s just so much fun that could be had with this comment thread. But I also will take the high road and keep my clever comments to myself. Seriously, thanks for doing the ‘Administrator’ job for this site. I know that even with a site as low key and friendly as this one, there’s still challenges to be dealt with behind the scenes.
You and Mr Grumby! I’m so impressed at this display of self discipline.
