ANOTHER CHALLENGE

I don’t know where to put this, so have chosen “articles’. You may well not be interested in this, but some or one of you may be, so I am sharing it with you all. Susan and I are giving it a try.

There are a few rules of course ;’-). We did our first night ride last evening and loved seeing all the Christmas light decorations. I don’t get out much after dark, so the lights were definitely a treat.

Before retiring, and as wage slaves, we both did a lot of bike commuting to our individual jobs, and of course that meant riding in the dark. Have not chosen to do that in a long time, but having sufficient lights and gear, we choose to challenge ourselves. I have no real idea if we will complete the challenge, but hey — we have 3 months to do 5 three mile rides (and now we have one done). Chances are good we will get there.

That looks like a great challenge! I rode nightly in college with a group of mtn bike guys – we’d ride from 9-late most nights. And I still got up at 6am for work each morning after (ah, to be young and have energy!). Alas, at the moment I’m asleep not long after dark (which is about 8.45 here right now) and only have roads with speed limits of 65mph to ride on which aren’t safe after dark. I hope you will post about your challenge rides though so I can live vicariously through you!

I will keep you posted Em. With all kinds of luck I hope to be doing my riding between 5:30 and 6:00. It gets dark early around here. I too am in bed quite early as I am a very early riser to enjoy my favorite part of the day —- morning.

Knowing you, you’ll be finished with those rides by Christmas! I rarely even drive in the dark and can’t imagine biking in it. I will cheer you on though, because I love reading about your adventures. I do have lights, but only carry them on bike trips for emergencies.

You have great faith in me Laura ;’-). I doubt I would do all the rides by Christmas, but that is not allowed on the challenge anyway (thank goodness). You must spread out your rides over at least two of the three months of the challenge.

Thank you for cheering me on, and I will see what I can come up with to report about. Not much can happen on a 3 mile ride ;’-). Thanks for your support.

Hey, that sounds like fun. I don’t do enough night riding anymore.

I had this feeling that you would be interested in doing this one Greg ;’-).

Sound like fun – if I can get myself out. But 5 km isn’t a lot and the sun sets pretty early here, too. We are on about the same latitude as you are, I believe. So we’ll see… But I will have to find a route that is well it. Even with goods lights on my bike I wouldn’t ride in the woods at night.

Well maybe, just maybe you will join me for this challenge Suzanne. I would not ride in the woods at dark either. Look for a good route and repeat that one or one close to it,

I have done one, and a second may happen in another week or so when we take our RV outing up to Port Townsend. Will keep you posted.
