Not a flag, banner, pennant or windsock on my route today. I came upon something I thought was quite ’different’ though.

What the heck are these bundles, I wondered.

A closer look did not help much except to tell me they were ’Gem Premier Fines’.

And there was no one to ask. So what to do? I know — use Rich’s trick and go google!

Definition of fines

i. Finely crushed or powdered material, e.g., of coal, crushed rock, or ore, as contrasted with the coarser fragments; esp. material smaller than the minimum specified size or grade, such as coal with a maximum particle size less than 3.2 mm, or ores too pulverulent to be smelted in the ordinary way; or material passing through a given screen or sieve.

Ref: AGI

ii. An engineering term for the clay- and silt-sized soil particles (diameters less than 0.074 mm) passing U.S. standard sieve No. 200.

Ref: AGI

iii. See Also: anthracite fines

Now I know what they were, but still have no idea what this product is used for. Rich??

I had a really nice ride today — and learned something new ;’-).

Interesting definitions, but what about the possibility that those bags are full cash–fines paid by speeders, stop sign runners, and parking violators.

I learn so much on this site! Thanks Rich. Besides the animal beds, the ‘shoebox scandal’ was a very interesting story.
