Not that kind of Can-Can This kind of can (can) After a winter of collecting cans of all sorts, the ditches here are resplendent with various examples. Wisconsin may have been out drinking us since 1848 but it looks like we are running a close second. HERE is a look at what Mixtie found … Continue reading "Mixtie Does the Can-Can"
A short month, just 30 days and very few rides. Medical stuff kept me off my bike for several days and a trip to Italy’s Lake Garda without our bikes meant another week’s pause. On the days I could ride, the weather was fine, for cycling anyway. The farmers would have liked more rain. Here … Continue reading "Cycle Days Challenge: April 2022"
The beginning of spring is not to be denied, whether you choose the meteorological March first or the astronomical March 20. Early spring flowers are popping up between the brown leaves on the forest floor and some bushes and trees are hesitantly beginning to show color. Read MORE on my website.
A mixed month: days of sun and rain, you never knew what was coming, rides from home, rides while touring, some days feeling good, some sick days. I had hoped for a more summer-like July. HERE are the pictures on my website. At the moment I don’t have a bike. The day before yesterday when … Continue reading "Cycle Days Challenge: The July 2021 Edition"
We waited … and waited … and waited for the first dandelions, blinding fields of canola, the leaves to bud – and very slowly, almost imperceptibly, a faint green shimmer of growth appeared. We had the coldest April in 40 years. However we did get some very nice days and I rode on 21 days … Continue reading "Walks and Rides: The April 2021 Edition"
In keeping with my plan to either walk or ride every day, I was out on 28 days in February. We had snow, some very frigid days and a few days of unusually high temperatures for this time of year. I was happy to have walking as an alternative form of exercise on the colder … Continue reading "Walks and Rides: February 2021"
This takes us to the end of 2020. A few photos have been posted with other subjects but are included here for continuity. To show the size of the Bruin’s feet Any stories about the photos are on my blog: https://adventureswithnancyg.blogspot.com As I say on the blog, I will continue with a photo of my … Continue reading "CYCLE DAYS #48-57"
Of course I was hoping for a mild and dry December. But this is winter and in spite of global warming, we have had plenty of below freezing nights, just above freezing days and some snow – some snow, not a lot of snow, more like decoration on the fields and trees, adding a little … Continue reading "Cycle Days Challenge: December 2020"
The foliage was particularly vibrant this year but the colors are fading fast and the temperature is dropping from day to day. We have already had many nights with temperatures below freezing, and although the days warm up a bit there’s no denying that more cold riding is in the offing. But the change to … Continue reading "Cycle Days Challenge: November 2020"
As I have not posted these in my blog https://adventureswithnancyg.blogspot.com, I will post these five photos of the day for our challenge. Now up to date for the ongoing challenge for this year. Some words about each ride are on my blog if interested.
It seems I have started every month’s entry with a comment on how fast time is going by – so I won’t do it this time. But it remains true. The fact that time is passing so quickly also means that winter will come and go just as fast as any other season. Is that … Continue reading "Cycle Days Challenge: October 2020"
What happened to Ride #3/15? It’s complicated, but took place on Oct. 3rd. I hope to tell you about it soon. While at a checkup for one of the tiny kittens we are fostering, I asked the vet tech if he thought the kittens were old enough to go for a bike ride. It was … Continue reading "Cycle Days Challenge #4/15 Riding with Friends"
Especially after Greg’s recent post, I feel verrrrrry fortunate to have OUR weather in MY town. ;’-). We remain in the 50s though gearing up this week for 40s and in the 30s at night, oh my! Again — most about these photos is on my blog — as a kind of repeat of a … Continue reading "CYCLE DAYS CHALLNEGE #16 -17"
Rides every day but most are redundant loops and out and backs and nothing much to see we haven’t already seen. So, the Challenge Rides are reserved for rides of a little bit different nature. Today, the day dawned bright and beautiful but with a moderate SW wind. So in light of that Dave and … Continue reading "Cycle Life Challenge Ride #4"
I may have underestimated the number of rides and photos for this challenge. But winter may bring more rain/snow/fog/ice than I am comfortable riding in. So I will wait and see before increasing my challenge numbers. Here I will include just the photo of these rides. As usual, a few words will discuss each ride … Continue reading "CYCLE DAYS CHALLENGE #6-9"
Yikes, I thought I just posted August and now it’s October. It’s that time of year again – the days are getting shorter, there’s a chill in the air, and the trees are beginning to turn. But it isn’t freezing cold yet, we have good air quality and no fires, there is nothing to complain … Continue reading "Cycle Days Challenge: September 2020"
I intended to ride on Thursday, but hadn’t slept well and was just too tired. Jim’s caretaker was coming again on Friday, so put it off a day. I love being able to ride from my home. I found a circular route with some country roads that I haven’t been on before. The goal was … Continue reading "Country Roads #2/15"
I posted the first photo a few days ago thinking I. Wuoiuld post at the end of each month. But —- my blog post was getting a bit long so I have decided to simply post whatever rides accumulate over a period of time. So — #1-5 of my 15 goal… To see more about … Continue reading "#1-5 CYCLE DAYS CHALLENGE"
Another perfect cycling day in Illinois There go Dave and Dwight along the North Fork River after having passed through bustling Cheneyville Weather due for a major change next week, and in fact, a ‘Small Dog Advisory’ for tomorrow with winds gusting 35-40 mph Taking advantage of this weather while we can We know Illinois … Continue reading "Cycle Days Challenge #3 + Bike Where Ever Day"
Another beautiful calm morning with just a bit of chill in the air. So off we go, Dave and I, to East Lynn, Illinois. East Lynn is a sort of mini Cooksville, but has suffered the ravages of time and economy. Agriculture is the mainstay here, with a fertilizer plant, diesel repair shop, and of … Continue reading "Cycle Days Challenge Ride #2"
I looked for and couldn’t find Suzanne’s original Cycle Days Challenge, but when I saw Nancy’s post referring to it, I decided to shoot for Nancy’s 15 rides between Sept 15th and the end of the year. I will feel successful if I only do half. I’d planned two different rides for today, but due … Continue reading "Riding in the Nabe @1/15"
I can ride! I can ride! And now, a little later in the day, AQ is 9 ??♀️?? Being late in the year, having just recently rediscovered the challenge, and having been off my bike for over a week with poor AQ due to wildfire smoke, I have set my goal at 15 rides for … Continue reading "HALLELUJAH! AQ AT 17"
Beautiful morning for a ride, a bit of a chill in the air, sunshine, and calm winds AQI of 17 — looked up the AQI for Santa Rosa, Seattle, and Spokane and found unbelievable numbers. 🙁 Question: Does the smoke find its way inside to some degree? A somewhat arch shaped bottle along the road … Continue reading "Cycle Days Challenge Ride #1"
I just wrote to Suzanne on her challenge post that I had forgotten all about this challenge. Having been such a year, maybe that is not such a bad thing for 2020! But I am now entering the challenge: RIDE 15 DAYS AND TAKE A PHOTO OF MY BIKE EACH OF THOSE DAYS FROM 9/15-12/31 … Continue reading "CYCLE DAYS CHALLENGE BEGINNING NOW"
Still summer, but not for long Our last real summer month, August, has passed way too fast. September ceratinly has some lovely days in store for us, but the days are getting shorter and the evenings are cooler, there is no denying it. Here’s the link to the August edition of my bike rides.
I don’t always take my birthdays that seriously, but becoming an octogenarian did feel a bit – what’s the right word – portentous? meaningful? auspicious? awesome? formidable? something else? none of these? all of these? Whatever, here I am, riding my bike and feeling pretty good most of the time. Here’s the post with pictures … Continue reading "Cycle Days Challenge: July 2020"
First half of the year finished, another half to go… whichever way you look at it, the time is going fast, the days are already getting shorter… HERE are my pictures for my rides in June.
Another month that rushed past before we knew it. Delicate green turned to a lush green in the woods, in the fields and wherever you looked – green green green. It was a good month for riding, I didn’t miss a day. Janos and I discovered some new destinations for our outings. We have pretty … Continue reading "Cycle Days Challenge: May 2020"
Staying Close to Home A month of mostly beautiful spring weather, but we don’t have the choice of where to ride. We ride loops and out-and-backs, connecting up different sections of the available roads and trails near home. Although we miss being able to take off heading for distant horizons, riding within a limited radius … Continue reading "Cycle Days Challenge: April 2020"
A Month without Precedent No need for explanations as we all know what has made this month unique in the worst way. The effects of the coronavirus and the measures to prevent its spreading are omnipresent. That said, I have been riding my bike where it is safe, and that is on the empty paths … Continue reading "Cycle Days Challenge: March"
February: a cold warm month……… Embrace winter, ride your bike, that was my motto. I did pretty well, but February kind of got me down. I thought it would never end. Let’s hope March will bring some milder days for being out and about. Not that February was a cold month according to the weather … Continue reading "Cycle Days Challenge: February Edition"
First of all, many many thanks to all of you for the lovely wishes for a good trip! I had been a bit secretive about our travels, being beset by a bit of “flight shame” and also feeling reluctant to take a long trip without our bicycles. And I am always nervous before the beginning … Continue reading "December: Leaving ice and snow behind"
It’s been wonderful to experience the gradual change of seasons in our new surroundings, from spring to summer, summer to autumn, and now autumn full-fledged with pumpkins for sale on the roadside, mushrooms to be found in the forest, bright foliage and the occasional fog. I again was able to get out every day on … Continue reading "Cycle Days Challenge: October"
My goal for August was to get a ride and picture every day. There were some rainy days, some lazy days, a sick day and computer problems where I thought I might have lost all my pictures. It was a struggle. HERE is the story with pictures, mainly pictures, on my website page.
June: More from our new hunting grounds … I haven’t been on my bicycle all that often in June (except for the usual shopping and the like), although we have endless possibilities for short and long outings from our front door. This month’s pictures give you an idea of our more or less immediate surroundings. … Continue reading "Cycle Days: Rides in June"
I guess I have mentioned our move about a hundred times at least. But here I go again in my blog entry for May…There is so much to explore in our new surroundings, and we have just begun. However, the move was a lot of work and it didn’t leave a whole lot of time … Continue reading "Rides in May"
An amazing month, although it started out innocently enough. No April Fools’ pranks on the first, but on the day after a series of events led to unexpected developments in a flash. Yes, I’ve already told you that we are moving and that isn’t really a bicycle related topic … or is it? If riding … Continue reading "Cycle Days in April"
IN LIKE A LION, OUT LIKE A LAMB …This proverb seems to apply more or less to March this year. Early in the month we still had snow flurries and some snow sticking to the ground for a short time, but as the days passed the air warmed up and nature seemed to come to … Continue reading "My Rides in March – Cycle Days Challenge"
Last year I had zero rides in January and one ride in February. This year, the first half of the month we were in Spain, but between January 16 and January 31, I cycled on 13 days. Come on folks, let’s hear that applause! The rides weren’t long but I decided anything would count as … Continue reading "My Rides in January – Cycle Days Challenge"
The sky was quite resplendent this morning, albeit for only a short time. From pink . . . to gold in about ten minutes. All the colour had faded away soon after.
I had forgotten about the number of rides challenge so am starting that now with re-naming my last post to include ‘Ride #1’. That means today was ride #2 ;’-). It started as a utilitarian ride (which I don’t intend to include in the number of rides for the challenge), but ended up being a … Continue reading "RIDE #2: WITH A FEW CLOUDS ALSO"
Thank you Nancy, Suzanne, Rich, Em and Tony for the good luck wishes for the Rapha Festive 500 challenge. The participant count is up to 91,228. 645 people have completed the challenge to date. I am delighted to report that I am one of those. I’m hanging my bike up for the rest of 2018. … Continue reading "RIDE # 178: 28 DECEMBER 2018"
I picked up a birthday “tradition” while living in The Netherlands. I think some of you share it. Ride Your Age. In most cases, this means a ride length equal to or longer than your chronological age. My Duch cycling friends added a maximum speed equal to or faster than your chronological age to the … Continue reading "RIDE # 154: 20 NOVEMBER 2018"
Bike and hike is my idea now. I prefer walking when it gets cold. So Janos and I cycled to the Olympic Park – we could have walked there but it’s such a boring walk – parked our bikes and climbed the smaller of the two Olympic hills. Bike and hike is perhaps a slight … Continue reading "One More Before We Go"
That was it for October, and as I had hoped, a month of beautiful colors and many sunny days. Most of my rides were not long, just around town, but it felt good to be in the saddle so often this time of year. No more trips planned for this year, bicycle trips that is. … Continue reading "100 Cycle Days Challenege – October"
Another month has passed by. I’m deliberately not riding or using the computer much in the evenings after big days of mental exertion at work. So I’ve got a bunch of catching up to do on everyone’s adventures over the past few weeks! This also means I only rode on 10 of 18 work days … Continue reading "Cycle Days Challenge: October"
We are indeed appreciating the weather down here even though Seattle has been having some gorgeous sunny days as well. But here we are riding in shorts! We did get to the American River Trail and did most of it. It is a great trail and we will do it again on one or our … Continue reading "Old Town and The River Trail"
We are driving to Sacramento for a visit with the Grands, and I am adding the trip to my blog. Rather than try to recreate it here, I am trying something new — adding a link!! Am not sure I will be successful. But here is the try. First here is a photo from the … Continue reading "Riding for covered bridges"
I read that the general rule of thumb is that you retain endurance for about 2 weeks, but by the 4-week mark of inactivity you are back to baseline. I put that to the test over the weekend with a pair of 70+ kilometre rides. I’m not sure those rides meet my doctor’s definition of “gentle.” … Continue reading "RIDE #139: 07 OCTOBER 2018"
Reflection Ride The last ride I posted, the one about the “Do Not Feed The Monkeys” sign, was punctuated by a crash. A motorcyclist turned across my path from the right without stopping at the T-junction or looking left before rolling into my path. I rode home with sore right-side ribs, scrapes on my right … Continue reading "Ride #137: 05 October 2018"
They are beginning to pop up around here. On my ride yesterday to find a reflection, I came upon this completed display and others that were in the beginning stages, to be captured on a later ride. A little skeleton family… I shortened my ride quite a bit as after just about 10 minutes the … Continue reading "#2 HALLOWEEN SIGHTING"
So normally there would be a video of after-work rides for the month. But my goal was to not ride this month. Plus, after-work options were few since I did not work for three of the weeks, yippee! I did do three very short and very gentle rides after I got back to Australia on … Continue reading "September Cycle Days Challenge"
My first sighting of Halloween in my neighborhood. On my final ride of the month, I enjoyed some solo time on quiet Sunday morning streets before arriving for a tea & crumpet stop. This yard was the first that had decorations up last year, so this year was an appropriate stop. I do like to … Continue reading "Halloween is in the Wings ;’-)"
That was it for September. The month just flew by. I got 18 rides in, the second most rides after May where I rode on 21 days. September was again a month with so much good weather, it wasn’t hard to get out and ride. I wonder what October will bring. We are kind of … Continue reading "Cycle Days Challenge – September"
What a difference a week makes, last week I rode / coasted down the Gorge De La Nesque, temps in the mid 20s C. Today’s ride took place in damp cool conditions temps barely into double digits C. Having a few errands to run this morning sadly by car. I noticed in one of the local villages something I don’t I have ever seen before. 6th September – 16th September The plan was to cycle on Thursday afternoon to Milton Keynes and stay overnight in the accommodation I had pre-booked. The following morning I would board the transportation that would hopefully whisk to Orange, France. From Orange I would cycle to Montbrun – les – Bains, spending a week cycling … Continue reading "Cycle Days #8 to #17 of 75 – A Trip to France"
My handlebar bag just couldn’t handle all the stuff I was putting in it. Or maybe I couldn’t handle it. What with the big-ish camera, nothing else was easily accessible. I was always scrounging around for the keys, kleenex, wallet, reading glasses, didn’t have room for my sunglasses and gloves when I got off the … Continue reading "New Gear – Ride Number 99"
Hi, everybody! We’re back from our trip from Munich to the Adriatic. I am trying to catch up with all the intersting posts here. Anyway, here is the page from … Continue reading "August Cycle Days – 17 Rides"
Lovely warm sunny day with light winds. This bronze of a race horse in West Lockginge is very impressive. As are the former tied cottages of the Estate workers. Another month has rolled by. We didn’t do a whole heap of rolling. It was a cold August. Both average highs and lows were 2C below normal. We tied for record lows (-5C) two days in a row this week. Our normal low in late August is between +4 and 5 degrees C. It was … Continue reading "Cycle Days Challenge: August Rides"
Cool start after some overnight rain, gilet and arm warmers. Heading out to the west, I came to Kingston Bagpuize. This is the main road into the village and will be closed for 5 weeks for the installation of a 300mm gas main. The traffic is diverted through the minor roads and surrounding villages causing … Continue reading "Cycle Day #6 of 75"
Needed to visit the Lottie (allotment) again today to check for any damage after yesterdays heavy rain and strong winds that came in during the afternoon. Once again I would take a ‘scenic’ route, so first off it was out to Drayton. East door Drayton parish church. Entrance gate to church/ churchyard, the brass plaque … Continue reading "Cycle Day #5 of 75 – Another Short One"
Heavy rain was forecast from around 11:00 onwards, with a couple of errands to do I set off just after 9:30. Sadly it started to rain as I left. Heading … Continue reading "Cycle Day #4 of 75 – Before the Rain – Or so I hoped"
I got ride #84 in without even having to visit a bunker! And we are planning some bigger rides before the summer is finished. If all goes well, before we return from the trip I will have chalked up 100 Cycling Days for the year. It’s always knock on wood these days, but I hope … Continue reading "Ciclovia Alpe-Adria, Ice Cream and Ride #84"
I was all set for our ride 15 km to the west of Munich, to our second-to-last hochbunker. Before leaving, I cast one more look at the website description of the structure to make sure I would find it – then I noticed the small print. It was demolished in 2013. Glad I saw that. … Continue reading "To the Last Hochbunker – Ride 83"
Today started off in a dull and damp way, the drizzle was not forecast though not heavy. Setting off around 9:30 it was out into the villages to the west of town. After around 12 miles I arrive in Charney Bassett, the church below is somewhat austere and not attractive at all. This bridge crosses … Continue reading "Cycle Day #3 of 75 – A No Theme Ride"
Another ride in quest of Munich’s hochbunkers, above-ground air raid shelters remaining from WWII. I have (again) changed the organization of my website. My rides will now be on the blog and not under the header titled Challenges. The site had become kind of a hodgpodge with overlapping categories. So back to the good old … Continue reading "The Big Ten Bunker Tour – 100 Bicycle Days Challenge"
Today’s mission was to visit our allotments and cut the grass paths. Due to the recent hot weather and the more recent rains the grass had got somewhat out of hand, the photo only show around a quarter of the area we use. Took around two and a half, time well spent. Journey – solo … Continue reading "Day #2 of 75 – Just a short one"
In Catholic Bavaria, August 15, the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, is a public holiday. It was a beautiful day with temperatures in the low 20’s C, and it being a holiday, meaning little traffic, it was perfect for our ride through the city to seak some more hochbunkers I had on my list. Before … Continue reading "Ride 80 – Through Munich and to Two More Hochbunkers"
Having discovered Suzanne’s Days Challenge I’ve set myself the task of completing and recording 75 journeys by years end. Today was day one of my Quest. St Helen’s Church Dry Sandford. Well, not just a walk in the park, we did ride our bikes to get there, but the park was certainly the highlight. I haven’t been posting all my Cycle Days Challenge photos, I thought I would just wait until the end of the month and link to my website. But (Rich!) I wanted to … Continue reading "A Walk in the Park – Cycle Days Ride 79"
I stopped working about three years ago. I’ve stayed reasonably healthy since then too. Not falling off my bicycle has helped in that regard. Time and health have allowed me to aim to ride at least 12,000km / 7,456mi per year. Which I did in 2016 and 2017. I’m delighted to say that I am … Continue reading "The Eddington Number"
This July was one of the five hottest since temperatures have been recorded here. It’s still hot, the thermometer showing 32°C, and going strong into August. For us anything around 30°C is very hot. So I have stayed home the last few days instead of pedaling. Am I being sensible or just lazy? So far … Continue reading "Thinking of Vincent – Cycle Days Challenge"
Oh, July, where have you gone? You have zipped by too quickly, and we are now well and truly on the back side of winter. “No, no,” cries Emily and the crew. “We love winter. Pedals started turning at 4.58am to start our Blood Moon ride. The total lunar eclipse was in progress. It wasn’t long before the full phase gave way to the partial phase. Ninety minutes later the show was over.
The Kuala Lumpur minibus service was introduced in 1975. The buses had a capacity of between twenty and thirty passengers. The per-ride fare when the service was introduced was 40 sen (10 US cents). In its heyday in the 1920s and 1930s, Ipoh was the epicentre of a tin mining boom. Newly minted millionaires built mansions like this one. Epitomised by these remains of what was … Continue reading "RIDE #110: 22 JULY 2018"
The Leaning Tower of Teluk Intan was built in 1885. It is 25.5 metres tall and houses a water tank on the third floor and a clock on the sixth floor. The tower was built on soft ground. Die Hunde Kommen – that’s what I found when I went out on my bike today. I didn’t feel like anything ambitious, I hardly managed to get myself out of the house. But I finally did, without a destination in mind. I ended up cirlcing around the Olympic Park and looking for nooks and crannies … Continue reading "July Challenge – Looking for Old Stuff"
We were looking for negelcted, run-down and forgotten buildings, so-called lost places. I remember at the onset of a trip to Innsbrück eleven years ago we came across an old round house on the Isartalbahn bike path, a disused railway line on the southern edge of Munich. We cycled there today and found the former … Continue reading "The New Old Isartalbahn Round House"
We have just begun a 2 month caravan trip on mainland Australia. The first stop was Melbourne and the main tasks there were to get a mountain drive fitted to the Brompton (didn’t trust Tasmanian dealer mechanics) and to ride the Capital City Trail to get some ks in.
When we ride to Kundang, we often stop at Sin Loong Kee noodle shop for breakfast. That noodle shop has been serving bowls of delicious noodles since 1955. That counts as old in a country which got its independence in 1957. This corrugated sheeting is new, but the rest of the building has that patina that … Continue reading "RIDE #98: 30 JUNE 2018"
I have over-achieved! I chalked up 14 days in June that can count toward my 100-Bicycles-Challenge, that makes a total of 59 days for the year so far. For the first half of the year, I have more than 50 days! But the conditions were favorable. Considering we were on a multiple-day tour and had … Continue reading "Bicycle Days Challenge with Victoria – All of June"
I have a big riding goal for the year. I probably won’t meet that. How many other goals should I take on? How can I participate in Suzanne’s Cycle Days Challenge? Scott asked for it – so here it is. Today (or maybe tomorrow depending on offical Astronomical reckoning) is the Winter Solstice. So today the sun is out and there is no … Continue reading "Winter Solstice in Tasmania"
A favourite ride includes loops around the Kelab Darul Ehsan golf course. Today’s ride along the west coast from Morib to Port Dickson included 153kms on the bike and too much time spent in the sun. It also included a couple of short ferry rides at Sungai Pelek. Today’s ride from Himara to Saranda is the reverse of the ride we took two days ago. It’s dramatic and beautiful route along the Albanian Riviera, but we enjoy it much more than the first time, when it was an unbearably hot and humid 95. Today it’s milder, much more bearable. The route impresses for the … Continue reading "Cycle Days Challenge, #43"
The turnaround point on this morning’s ride was at the Fatt Hwa Gong Temple in Semenyih. Set into the upper level of the stairway is a dragon frieze flanked by two penzai or penjing trees. Penzai or penjing is the Chinese tradition of the Japanese bonsai.
I’ve given up for the moment on posting photos for each daily ride. We’re riding nearly every day, and blogging it on CycleBlaze. From time to time I’ll post an … Continue reading "Cycle Days Challenge, day 42"

Munich Westpark June 6, 2018 What a treat the Rosengarten in Munich’s Westpark is this year. It seems everything is in full bloom at the same time.
