Cycle Days Challenge: The July 2021 Edition

A mixed month: days of sun and rain, you never knew what was coming, rides from home, rides while touring, some days feeling good, some sick days. I had hoped for a more summer-like July. HERE are the pictures on my website.

At the moment I don’t have a bike. The day before yesterday when I tried to open the garage door, the type that swings up, it wouldn’t budge. I turned the key this way and that but to no avail. The next morning I called the superintendent of the building and he came immediately, but couldn’t fix it. He said we were lucky that the car was outside and not locked away. I didn’t bother to explain, but the real problem is that our bikes are locked away, we seldom need the car. The locksmith was then called, but didn’t make it yesterday. Today I am still waiting to get access to my bike.

But I have a food picture from several days ago. I rode my bike to go shopping, that’s the closest connection I can make to cycling. Sometimes I don’t bother to put on my reading glasses when shopping as was the case this time. I just grabbed this piece of cheese because it had an Italian sounding name and said chipotle on the label, that much I could read without the glasses. If possible I buy products that don’t involve a long transport distance. At home I saw that the Bellavitano Sartori cheese with chipotles was imported from Wisconsin! I was really amazed that our local Edeka market had cheese from the USA. It tasted pretty good.

I'm a US born ex-pat, having lived most of my adult life in Munich, Germany. Cycling and photography are my favorite things.

Looks to me like you got in a lot of riding for what seems to have been a rainy month ;’-). All your photos tell a good story and are gorgeous as usual. Now nice to have a cappuccino stop to wait out the rain! Love your birthday photo — you and one of your favorite things ;’-). Now that horse “framed” photo is top notch. What a find. At first I thought it was a photo of a photo. Good month of rides, but lots of challenges for you as well. On to better time.

You are lucky. Our garage has no other doors or windows. I was afraid the guy was going to have to use a blow torch or something. But he did some magic with a screwdriver and oil. … Again thanks for the award, some of the best pictures are in the worst weather.

Thanks, Nancy! It felt like a rainy month, but many days were half rain, half sun, so I guess I got out pretty often.

    Excellent as always.
I too thought the horse photo was a painting at first.
Birthday photo is great, and see little change in you guys from your 2011 tour.

Thanks, Rich! I feel the ten years difference, even if you don’t see it readily in the pictures. Some pictures just don’t get posted.

Luckily if my overhead garage door were to get stuck, I could wheel my bike out the back door. If the back door was also jammed, I could carry my bike down eight steps, enter into my basement, then carry my bike up eight steps and wheel it out the front door. If that option wasn’t available, I guess I’d just have to saw a bike-sized opening into my garage door.

I’m sure our resident Green Bay Packer fan, Lednar, will be happy to see that Wisconsin’s cheese empire extends all the way to Germany.

And finally, “The Greg’s Favorite Suzanne Picture Award” for the month of July goes to . . . . . . “Caught in the Rain.” With the gray skies, the sad bikes and the wet road, the photo captures the helplessness and gloom we’ve all experienced at one time or another.

This comment was meant for you, Greg, I think I put it in the wrong place. …”You are lucky. Our garage has no other doors or windows. I was afraid the guy was going to have to use a blow torch, pick axe or sledge hammer. But he did some magic with a screwdriver and oil. … Again thanks for the award, some of the best pictures are in the worst weather.”

Wow! You’ve had some bad luck. I hope you can get your bikes out soon.

What is knoblauch on the ingredient list?

It really looks like you made the most of the month, even if it wasn’t ideal. I love that moody sky pic over the grain field.
