JANUARY RIDE #12

In a way I am surprised, and pleasantly so, to have gotten 12 rides this wet and stormy month. And I must say, being the challenging month it has been, Rich’s challenge has been spot on! And a motivational tool for me to ride more than I might have. Thank you Rich.

Colder and damper on this ride yesterday, I shortened my neighborhood ride even more. Half way brought this.

And they had told us we would not only be rain free, but lots of sun for the day. Uh Uh. But I was, of course, dressed for it and am getting weary of wearing so many layers for days like this 38 degree damp day. Fortunately it rained for only the last part of my ride, but was a cold rain with big fat drops.

A couple more pictures of where I ride as Rich shows interest in that ;’). This traffic circle is relatively new at the corner.

It looks good and is good, to a certain degree. The traffic is normally light when I ride here, but those motorists have become more familiar with it and use it a bit more than they did earlier. Of course — bikes are expected to ride up on the sidewalk, stop at the other end, get off your bike and cross over and join the circle on the other side. This is just not right and is a total hassle. So, as I have done when cycling in France and Amsterdam, I stay on the road. I look for when there is little to no traffic behind me, slow down to let any pass, and speed up around the circle giving hand signal. It has worked so far.

Here is the vision of the developers. They tried, but with the lack of bike comfort and familiarity as a mode of transportation in our country, they missed the mark only a little.

After entering the circle on the road, I easily get into the nicely marked bike lane asap. I am on the sidewalk here just to take the photos. I cannot imagine anyone sitting on that bench for any reason.

Any amount of time on the bike is better than no time on the bike.

Love your selfie! Rain is not fun but the picture is!
I, too, enjoy seeing your neighborhood views. 🙂
I always prefer to ride on the road for traffic circles. Here the person in the circle has right of way, I don’t know how it is in the US, but I feel pretty safe entering and leaving the circle.

Selfie was not planned until I was passing by it. ;’-)
I feel safe enough on this circle and probably on circles where I would be riding. Traffic circles are kind of newish here in the US, and not all drivers know how to drive in them! One of my friends says he thinks they are a “hazard”!! Circles are especially new in the smaller neighborhoods and I think they are good for traffic as the at least cause drivers to slow down. I do not know about the rule of individuals in the circle having the right of way, but can hope that is the case here as well. I will have to research that.

Thanks Nancy, that was a pure By Guess, By Gosh, and By Golly thought about the January challenge,

Love to see the ‘everyday’ photos!

Ed Devlin, on that other site, once posted photos of his training rides in Virginia, and I thought that was pretty cool to see what he sees with no particular point or focus in mind,

If the weather prognosticators are correct, we are in for a Minnesota type snow event Tues/Wed.
Riding has been extremely limited here — except for the Le Tour in bondage to the trainer!

OK now — you and Suzanne have asked for it! I may well be posting more regular route photos ;’-0. I like seeing them too from anyone who rides. We may all feel that way, and so we are happy with this month’s challenge. Perhaps we can all let that meld into following months and post such photos on our normal daily rides as well as have a single challenge photo to look for. That was probably the driver for this site anyway. Now we need to encourage others to join our little happy group here.

Weather – ugh! More coming here too, and with our trip coming up I might be out of the saddle for much of the remainder of January. Although, I keep saying that and keep having chances to ride 😊👍.

Thanks Bill. That was an unplanned but good stop ;’-)
