Murky Morning Ride

Yesterday’s plan to visit the windmill at Brill was thwarted by thick fog. Though I did ride for a couple hours I went without a camera.

Still foggy this morning (it would never clear) I had to deliver advent calendars to our two eldest granddaughters, who live in Abingdon. Not a very pleasant prospect as the temperature was just above freezing point. Not sure if it was worth while to do so, perhaps you’ll be the judge of that.

This is the Thames at Abingdon again, I liked the colours on the trees on the opposite bank. I’m heading home now after seeing Freya.

This area at the end of Peep O’Day Lane floods every winter, the water fowl swimming away are Wigeon.

These Mute Swans were feeding on the surface weed, this water is pretty stagnant.

This expanse of water is about a mile away from home and is known in county birdwatching circles as Drayton 1066 or alternatively Drayton Floods. During the winter months it is home to many species of birds, including on occasions rare migrants.

Though only an 11 mile round trip I did mange to add to my list for Oxon Aquatics Quest.

Fog is never good for cycling, but if I can see a half mile or more. I go with a blinky on back.
The swan eating duckweed? Not that I know, that’s the only aquatic weed I’m familiar with.
Looking up Drayton 1066 I did see postings of the birds that were observed there — Does the 1066 have to do with the Norman invasion?

Rich, I thought it was duckweed as well.
No idea why its called that, we are a long way from the invasion site and in the Domesday Book of 1086 Drayton is recorded as having only 10 households, so one of the smaller settlements.

Fog makes for nice atmospheric pictures if not for pleasant pedaling!

Yes I think you’re right Suzanne, in retrospect I’m glad I took the camera.

Photos are great! In winter month I am always reluctant to bike in foggy conditions.

Thank you Nancy, before retiring I hated riding into work in foggy conditions, since then I can pick and choose.

Since you left it up to us to decide whether your bike ride was worthwhile, I’m going to vote in the affirmative. Nice bird pictures.
