My First Polygon

I’m somewhat pleased with myself that I’ve been able to get out for a winter ride three out of the first five days of the New Year. Yesterday was a nice sunny day and quite pleasant to ride. Today unfortunately, was damp and cloudy. That first picture below was taken today. As you can see, pretty dreary looking. Not the greatest weather for photography, but it is what it is.

Some time ago, Bill suggested that I post a photo showing my winter biking attire. I generally don’t like pictures of me, but here you go.

The feature photo at the top, by the way, shows an area called Retreat Meadows. That guy is clearing an area that will be used for skating. In a few more weeks, assuming it gets cold enough, the entire area will be filled with ice fishing shacks.
Ride today: 12.2 miles

Good for you to ride in that weather! I too have ridden 3 of the 5 days this month —- but we have rain to dodge, not snow! You cold weather gear looks, from the outside, much like mine ;’-).
This time of year, you definitely have to take advantage of every day that’s rideable, I’d be really happy to get in 20 days this month.
It’s interesting to see dedicated individuals out shoveling the snow off the frozen lakes for ice skating. Around here, that usually means their kid plays hockey, and more ice means more free practice time. Hockey is serious business. Recently, even 8th graders are being scouted by college hockey coaches.
As far as I know, that area is pretty much all casual skating. There is a rink in town that is more devoted to hockey. I don’t think hockey is quite as big a deal as in your state, however.
You get the award for “most hazardous polygon”. I not so convinced about the reliability of the “support pole”. It looked like a nice day to be shovelling snow off ice… if there is ever a nice day for that activity? They used to allow ice skating in winter at one of the city park lakes where I went to uni. Even then, 25 years ago, it didn’t freeze over enough every year to allow it. I imagine with climate change that ice skating there is no longer a thing in any year.
Hmmm, I didn’t even think about it being hazardous. I think maybe it’s more secure than it looks in the picture. I hope. I’m sure global warming has shortened the season here too, but in all the time I’ve been here, it’s frozen over pretty solid every winter.
