Cycle Days Challenge: May (entries 13 – 17)

So I like this challenge, but I’m getting behind.  To speed things up a bit I’m going to batch my entries.  This post is for days 13-17, and came from five consecutive days: May 11-15. The featured image is on the harbor in Agios Nikolaos, Crete.  The remaining four: Continue here to see the complete … Continue reading "Cycle Days Challenge: May (entries 13 – 17)"

The challenging bridge at Andros

It’s been challenging seeking out bridges in Greece worthy of the challenge.  We’ve been in the islands, and there just haven’t been many bridges around.  I’ve been quite stressed about this, as I’m sure you can imagine. We finally found a second bridge yesterday though, and it was definitely a challenge.  Challenging enough that we … Continue reading "The challenging bridge at Andros"

May Bridge Challenge – Bridge 4

We looked to avoid all the Mothers Day traffic that would be heading to eateries, scenic destinations, etc by doing a 56 kilometre loop on country roads southeast of Wangaratta. We crossed two bridges – one with water, the other with none. We also traveled over many culverts, some with water underneath and some bigger … Continue reading "May Bridge Challenge – Bridge 4"

Cycling Into The Future

For the past eleven months the Main Street, Broadway, of Seaside has been closed. There has been much construction. New drainage systems, sidewalks extended with added seating, trees planted and bicycle parking added. Broadway was completely closedown for several months. This caused some of the existing businesses to shutdown……the word on the street was that … Continue reading "Cycling Into The Future"

Cheneyville Bridge 2011/2018

I came across Bill’s Journal cycling from Colorado to Virginia and was particularly interested in the section covering Illinois, and especially Vermilion county (Paxton to Lafayette Indiana). The description of Bill’s thoughts about the motel here in town, while very accurate, are still the source of a good chuckle. Many of the descriptions and photos … Continue reading "Cheneyville Bridge 2011/2018"

‘You call that a bridge?’ – May Challenge – Bridges 1-3

The crew and I did an overnight ride on the weekend. We rode over about seven bridges. But were they worthy of the Challenge? Did a bridge need to span a watercourse that had a certain water volume to count? I pondered this for awhile. In the end, I decided to take pics only of … Continue reading "‘You call that a bridge?’ – May Challenge – Bridges 1-3"

Brompton on a “Bridge cross the Mersey”, Tasmania

This 1970’s style concrete road bridge is not as romantic as “Ferry Cross The Mersey” by Gerry and the Pacemakers but it got me from West to East Devonport.  While crossing I didn’t sing “Ferry C T Mersey” much to everyone’s relief. Devonport is big on petroleum and bunker fuel imports.  It smells very rich. … Continue reading "Brompton on a “Bridge cross the Mersey”, Tasmania"

The Famous Spiral Bridge: My O.G.M.B.C. Submission

My entry for the Old Grumbleface May Bridge Challenge is going to be a history lesson.  Not a very in-depth history lesson, but certainly an exciting and self-serving history lesson.  When I set out this morning I thought I would simply meet the minimum requirement of a picture of my bike strategically placed in front of … Continue reading "The Famous Spiral Bridge: My O.G.M.B.C. San Francisco Bay Bridges

In honor of the current Cycle365 Challenge of the Month: Around northern California, “the Bay” usually refers to the broadest demarcation of San Francisco Bay, including its assorted lobes and other features such as San Pablo Bay, Carquinez Strait, Suisun Bay, etc. That large body of water defines and divides the landscape of our “Bay … Continue reading "San Francisco Bay Bridges"

Death Valley: Ride 3, Cottonwood Canyon

Many years ago, when our son, Ben, was a Boy Scout, his Troop undertook a multi-day backpacking expedition through Cottonwood Canyon in Death Valley. Unfortunately, most of the Scouts and adults were defeated by the combination of distance, terrain, heat, and lack of water, and couldn’t hike out on the last day. Ben, his friend … Continue reading "Death Valley: Ride 3, Cottonwood Canyon"
