Red Rock Canyon

Yesterday I rode the River Mountains Loop. For the second ride from my temporary base in Las Vegas, I chose Red Rock Canyon. According to what I read online, that National Conservation Area featured a paved road for cars through a stunningly scenic area. But it was a wide, low-speed, one-way loop with plenty of room for bikes. All that turned out to be true. Spectacular scenery. Lots of traffic, but low speed. Nice wide road with plenty of room for bikes.

    Calendar quality photos again! Beautiful!!

Many of the photos are of cross-bedded sandstone — ancient lithified sand dunes — and you get points for rust too, the red layers are iron oxide.

Several of the photos show the Paleozoic limestone that was thrust faulted over the Mesozoic sandstone formations — very cool!

Gotta be frustrating to be telling someone the truth and they still don’t/won’t want to believe you — glad you made your escape!

Thanks, Rich! I thought it was just bright colors splashed on cardboard. 😉

We will need your expertise again for Valley of Fire.

Spectacular scenery there and what spectacular photos you took Bill. It was well worth all the stop and snaps I’d say. Sure does sound crowded there and maybe one needs luck to even get into the park. You outlaw you.

I think a slightly earlier arrival on a weekday would avoid the crowds. I dawdled on a perfect Saturday when every local and every out of town visitor had the same idea. Don’t miss it!

Putting your climbing training to good use! I always figured you were an anarchist.

I was surprised how colorful it was. Then I was surprised again to discover Valley of Fire even more colorful.

Gorgeous – I was there back in 1998 or so. I don’t remember it being super crowded? Seems like it should have been even then. We would have been there in December, I think.
