Ride of Silence

The ride wasn’t on the right day and it wasn’t really silent, either. But it was in thought about cyclist safety on the roads and thinking of those who have been traffic’s victims.

For years there has been a discussion about building a bicycle path along the road from Gauting (where we live) to Neuried, on the edge of Munich. It’s a dangerous road for bicycle commuters who understandably don’t want to take the safe bicycle path through the woods. The path through the woods has a sealed surface, but it is longer and there is no lighting, which disqualifies it for the dark days of winter commuting. The strip of land needed for the new bicycle path belonged to an organization whose century-old constitution doesn’t allow it to sell its property – unless a similar piece of land could be offered in exchange. This obstacle was finally overcome and the construction of said bicycle path was started this summer. It should be finished before winter. It will have lanes in both directions and street lamps.

Janos and I rode over to the construction site to have a look.

I have never ridden this road – so glad to see the construction for the new bike path is underway.

Looking in the other direction – the complete stretch will be approx. 7 km.

Thankful that we have the leisure to ride on paths like this

I'm a US born ex-pat, having lived most of my adult life in Munich, Germany. Cycling and photography are my favorite things.

Every ride ought to include a Ride of Silence segment, however long or short.
The new bike path will be a great addition and it looks like they are cutting no corners building it.
Im envious of the paths you have to ride!

I can’t believe how much your first three pictures look like northern Minnesota.

That will definitely be a good addition for any cyclist — and the trails and paths you ride on are so nice as well.

Looks like you’ll have a nice new bike path. I hope they put a solid barrier between path and road.

Good timing for your move to Gauting. Germany looks like cycling heaven.
