The ride wasn’t on the right day and it wasn’t really silent, either. But it was in thought about cyclist safety on the roads and thinking of those who have been traffic’s victims.
For years there has been a discussion about building a bicycle path along the road from Gauting (where we live) to Neuried, on the edge of Munich. It’s a dangerous road for bicycle commuters who understandably don’t want to take the safe bicycle path through the woods. The path through the woods has a sealed surface, but it is longer and there is no lighting, which disqualifies it for the dark days of winter commuting. The strip of land needed for the new bicycle path belonged to an organization whose century-old constitution doesn’t allow it to sell its property – unless a similar piece of land could be offered in exchange. This obstacle was finally overcome and the construction of said bicycle path was started this summer. It should be finished before winter. It will have lanes in both directions and street lamps.
Janos and I rode over to the construction site to have a look.
