Ride of Silence Illinois

Memorial from the web

Memorial in town where a young cyclist was struck and died

Silent ride south of town, thinking of our councilor John, the kid on Seminary street, and all the others who lost their lives doing what we love.  And how I damn near came to the same fate as John one day as a pickup topped a small rise behind me and whizzed by with its mirror just inches from my shoulder.

Those pick-up truck mirrors are bad enough, but some pick-up trucks have extended mirrors. I get that they are necessary for towing purposes, but they are extra hazardous for cyclists. So drivers of those things should be extra alert for cyclists.

One time, a pick up with extended rear view mirrors hit the rear view mirror of one of my company’s delivery vehicles while passing in the other lane. Despite the fact that both mirrors were destroyed, the other truck didn’t stop.

Good job on getting out for the Ride of Silence.

Thats what hit our councilor, the story goes the driver leaned over to pick something up off the floor and went right just enough for that mirror to make contact.
Another thing to be mindful of concerning pickups, is stuff sitting cross ways in the bed and extending out to the right.
No intention of starting the mirror controversy, but I wouldn’t ride without one after my incident..

Nice memorial ride, Rich. Remembering those who were less fortunate and being thankful for good fortune.
