Ride of Silence – Munich

Today’s Ride of Silence in Munich
The Ride of Silence is an international cycling event on the third Wednesday in May, which commemorates cyclists killed and injured on public roads. Cyclists around the world are demonstrating for more attention and safety on the road.
We met at 6:30 in pouring rain – otherwise there might have been more participants – and it rained for the whole ride which took us to the site of white bicycles, placed where bicyclists have been injured or killed in traffic accidents. We had a police escort of seven motorcycles and several volunteers from the German Bicycle Club who helped guide the group of perhaps 50 cyclists through the inner city at rush hour.
I couldn’t get my camera out in the heavy rain but did manage to snap a few pictures with my smartphone. I don’t know if this demonstration has any impact on the public awareness. But I was glad I was there.

Hi Suzanne, thanks for the photos and participation in the Ride of Silence in Munich. Looks like a great turnout considering the conditions.
There isnt much of a cycling community here in town, but my friend and former colleague Dave and I did ride a few miles in silence for our friend John who was killed cycling several years back.
Very somber time, and hopefully this will bring more awareness to Sharing the Road.

This event is something that seems to have skipped Tasmania. I will enquire about it at the Tamar-Bicycle Users Group. Well done on riding in the rain – looks atmospheric.
You take amazing photos even with a phone! Good to see the turn-out, especially with such poor conditions. I wish it would have been on a weekend – much easier to get to a ride then instead of a weeknight if you have to travel to get to the ride.
Suzanne, great job in getting to the event and documenting it so well. Unfortunately, I missed out on the ride in the Minneapolis metro area. We had great weather too. I hope the turnout was a good as Munich’s.
