Short Ride on the Shortest Day of the Year

Stormy weather expected for the next couple days, so I got out for a Greg-style ride on the shortest day of the year. I think the solstice here is officially at 4:47 PM, so I’m a few hours early. Note that long shadow above.

Looks like there has been quite a bit of snow already.
What? Do people ride faster than 8mph? 😉
Great shot of the angled shadows with the sun low in the sky and as far south as its going to get!
That photo might be a little misleading as to how much snow. I’d say we have six to eight inches on the ground right now, but it’s been cold, so it has stuck around. We’re supposed to get heavy rain out of this latest storm, with temps then dropping to 10F, so who knows what it will be like in a day or two.
I’ve heard vague rumors of people going faster than 8mph, but totally unsubstantiated. 🙂
I would love it if I could ride on this shortest day of the year and do my shortest ride of the year.. But our ice conditions and continuing below freezing temps have forced me to stay inside for the past few days. And so it will continue for more days to at least the end of our week. Sigh,
I hear your frustration. Yesterday was my first day on the bike in six days, so I know how you feel. And now we’re hunkering down for the next storm.
Big snow or not, I admire a below-freezing bike ride . . . on gravel . . . with long shadows . . . at high speed.
Thanks. Every year, it takes me a little while to get my “winter legs” (winter wheels?). It seems a little scary at first on that frozen gravel and ice. But after a ride or two, it doesn’t seem quite so bad.
