Some Serious Business and Some Silly Business

Serious Business Regarding the January Challenge

As I announced earlier in the month, the January Challenge is going to be all about CHIMNEYS. As I also announced, I came up with the idea independent of any chimney suggestions from certain members of Cycle365. The Czar has spoken.

So go nuts with chimney pictures while out there on your bike rides, hikes, or cross-country ski adventures. It’s as simple as that. The Czar has spoken.

There can be no doubt about the simplicity of my proclamation. Yet, as your generous and benevolent Czar, I am going to add a little something extra to make it even simpler (and hopefully more fun.) YES, in addition to chimneys, I will grant you the opportunity to post ANYTHING that begins with the letters “C & H”. Think “chessboard” or “chilidog” . . . not C&H Pure Cane Sugar. The Czar has spoken.

Just now, I came up with something even more generous and benevolent. I remembered that many of you have already used a few “ch” words during December’s A-B-C Challenge. Therefore, I will extend the scope of the January Challenge to include words that begin with “th”, “wh”, “sh” (no scatological pictures please), and “ph.” The Czar has spoken.

If you have any questions, please contact me in the comments section below. Do not try to ask them in person because you will be turned away by my palace guards. And definitely do not ask if “ih” words are okay just so you can post a picture of your local IHOP restaurant. The Czar has spoken.

Silly Business: I just wanted to share a few reasons why icicles are a good thing.

Icicles are aerodynamic. They will not slow you down at all while on a bike ride.

Icicles will help keep shady characters at bay while you wait for the police to arrive.

A row of icicles will keep even shadier characters behind bars.

Icicles can be used to point out CHIMNEYS.

The Czar has spoken!

Hi. My name is Greg and I ride my bike a lot. That is to say, I ride my bike almost every day. I go on long rides and short rides. Sunny rides, cloudy rides, and rainy rides. I like commuting, errand-running, day-tripping, overnighting, and touring on my bike. I ride on city streets, highways, gravel, single track, and snow with equal enthusiasm. Sometimes I ride fast and sometimes I ride slow. I try to keep my feet on the pedals at stop lights and I do not dismount when I hop up on a curb. I have a roadie bike, a mountain bike and a touring bike. I try to accept any challenge a bike ride can throw at me without complaint. But I don't like bugs.

No icicles here at the moment (or ever). Might be some large industrial chimneys coming up, stay tuned.

Icicles rhymes with bicycles, they are drawn to each other, as we see in your pictures!

And I like that H challenge – but did you forget rh? A rhetorical question. Not that I am going to encounter many rhinestones or rhinoceroses on my rhides.

You’re right, I did forget rh. A good Czar, such as I, must correct his oversights. Therefore, I hereby extend the challenge to words that begin with “rh.” Perhaps you’ll be able to find a rhododendron or a rhesus monkey.

Of course, when I make my rh announcement public I will claim full credit for the idea.

Ooooh, icicles. I love icicles almost as much as I love bicycles. I especially like those because they look impressive but not dangerous or damaging.

Now, if only I can keep all these things on my brain as I also try to safely maneuver my bicycle!! The Challenge is on but for now, I am not. this may end up being a slim ‘rhiding’ month for me. First week is ice encumbered; next two weeks my bike will be getting a complete overhaul at it manufacturers in Eugene Oregon. I must try to ride another bike (maybe Susan’s bigger eBike) if it works for me. Stay tuned, I will let you know what happens.
In the mean time — being day one of the year: HAPPY NEW YEAR. Another negative for me is that I ALWAYS bring in the new year with a bike ride on New Year’s day ;’-(.
