Unum

A lovely day, hitting at least 70° F, so I scooted downtown to see the new “Unum” piece at Courthouse Square. Very nice, although a crew was working on it and blocking my shots. Unfortunately, no sign of our ice sculpture contest.

“The unity sculpture in Santa Rosa’s Old Courthouse Square has been unveiled. Called “Unum” meaning “oneness” or “together,” places emphasis on innovation, diversity, and engagement as leading values of Santa Rosa. A dedication ceremony with be held tonight at 5 PM featuring the sculpture’s artist, Blessing Hancock, along with the Art in Public Places Committee and Santa Rosa Public Art Program staff. The ceremony will include music and light refreshments.” (From KSRO radio site)
That is one unique sculpture! I like it!!
I would never have guessed its significance is a zillion years — very happy I escaped taking any art classes at Illinois State!
5PM and people are wearing jackets?? Seriously?? JK!
A surprisingly controversial sculpture due to the inclusion/exclusion of various languages. I think the link I made to the Press-Democrat article, which explains the piece, has its own links to more background information about all that. Anyway, I find it quite eye-catching. Photos in the online P-D show interesting angles I couldn’t get because of the crime scene tape while the crew was working.
As to weather, yesterday was unseasonably warm at 72 in Santa Rosa. By the time the dedication ceremony began at 5:00, the temp had dropped to 60 or 65, so most folks had no choice but to don two layers of beach clothes. 😉
An interesting sculpture indeed. Thanks Rich, for explaining it. ;’-). I would not have known.
